Maybe you and the groom to be should go out for a night on the town. That should result in some free time in late July.

Okay, fellas. My flight is booked! I was with thehatguy this past weekend. Everything is coming together for this. We will post more as the date gets closer, but it's gonna happen!

I seem to remember a "contribution" previously....has anything been set on that yet?

Ray, nothing is set on that front yet. I spoke to Den yesterday and we are considering two options. The first, is to have the BBQ feast catered like we did in the past. That option would prob need some contributions to help cover the costs. The other is a more laid back option, where everyone would bring their own favorite dishes and meats. Kind of like a pot luck/picnic type BBQ.

I like the catered affair personally. It's easier on guests, and takes the burden off of us so we can concentrate on the herf. Then again, the cost is higher.

We're open to input/suggestions, and will put out more info as we get closer. This is a just little more than 8 weeks away now, so we will need to decide in the next 2-3 weeks. Once we have final plans, we'll post here and on the first page.

Could do it Hawaiian style and just buy a pig and dig a pit. Have to use aluminum foil instead of palm leaves but it'll work.

I have a smoker here at the house. We can do a pig, smoke some ribs, beef brisket, or hamburgers and hot dogs. Or we can get Bill to cook. The cost for Billy is going to be $15-$20 a head. If I do it, It would be a donation for the cost of the meat.

However you want to do it is fine with me. Didn't we finish the pig last time? If so I'd get one 10-20lbs heavier this time.

Erick! It's been a long time, buddy. We're planning the next herf. Same basic plan as the first one that you catered. You planning to make the drive up from NC? We'd love to see you again!

We haven't made any firm decisions on the BBQ, so if you hav an interest in providing the food, send me a PM with details.

The family and I would love to come. I still have the cooker so if u guys want I could happily bring it along.

Will be great to see everyone and show u what I've been working on the last 4 years ;)

Erick, it will be great to see you again. Dang, but it's been a long time! We're good on the cooker. Den has one that we will use... plus, we're planning to outsource the work to Billy's Backyard BBQ.

UPDATE ON THE BBQ HERF:

We are getting close! The herf is still scheduled for Saturday, the 28th. Although that will be the day of the official herf and the BBQ, we encourage everyone to make this a weekend event. Here is the current agenda that we have lined up. Feel free to participate in any or all of the activities, or even strike off on your own to create your own (mis)adventure.

Friday, July 27th
  • Casa Hawk is open for camping next to the river. Bring your standard camping gear. Not sure that I'd take a Class A down the hill, but everything else should be fine.
  • Food is on your own. We will have a grill available if needed.
  • Poker games, drinking and all around merriment are known to occur upon your arrival and continue into the wee hours.
Saturday, July 28th
  • Breakfast is own your own.
  • Float the Shenandoah. Bring your inner tubes, floaties, or choice of personal watercraft. We usually start this around 11:00, but we're flexible.
  • BBQ Lunch/Dinner. We try to have the food ready for chowing down in the mid-afternoon. We are asking for everyone eating the prepared meal to chip in $15 per head. That's what it is costing us to get Billy's Backyard BBQ.
  • Poker Tournament. This usually kicks off around 7pm. We will likely have a tourney for cash (for the non-smokers) and one for cigars. Again, we will be flexible.
General Notes
  • If you have any pop-up tents/awnings, please bring 'em. They may not be needed, but it will be nice to have if they are.
  • A port-a-pottie will be on site for your use.
  • Be sure to bring enough chairs for your group.
  • BYOB! Don't be mooching my tequila, ya bastids!
  • This is a herf, so bring plenty of cigars to smoke.
  • Den's place is a bit off the beaten path, so a GPS or good directions from MapQuest will be needed.
  • We will be herfing on the bank of the Shenendoah, so feel free to bring swimming tunks, fishing poles, etc.
Other things to do
There are several attractions nearby that you might want to consider while you're close. Just a few are:
  • Charles Town Race Track and Casino. The casino has slot machines, table games and a poker room, if you're interested.
  • Harper's Ferry National Historical Park. I'd recommend a trip here if you've never been. Awesome way to spend a few hours.
  • Visit local wineries. Several wineries are within an hour's drive.
Last, but not least: Please RSVP here or via PM with how many attendees are in your party. Also let me know how many will be eating at the BBQ on Saturday. We need to provide Billy with an accurate count for prepartion pursposes.

Thanks all. Den and I look forward to seeing everyone in a couple of weeks!

Steve
