Tom who do you think only hangs out in chat and doesn't qualify as a CP member? Since there is no more chat hosted on CP and it currently exists autonomously it is pretty much a moot point now but maybe we can get them to self-exile from the board as an example to others.
I don't know why chat is such a hot button for you as I've never said it should go. Bottom line is that folks don't end up in debt from chat and then welch on the membership.

Tom it is a hot button for me because I have a few good friends in chat who don't post as much as many of us and I feel they are active members in their own right. I certainly agree with you on the bottom line and that is ultimately my point. That is why I have been actively opposing grouping chat and poker together. I think it is a witch hunt and creates double standard. We wouldn't say someone isn't active if they only participate in the pipe forum... or the lobby... or the sports forum, even though those forums are certainly not cigar focused.

We probably don't disagree as much as it may appear. My concerns are about the goings on in the Poker Room, and the bad light it shines on the forums. Frankly, I don't have an opinion about chat.

Edited to add - It would be a shame to think that someone would only hang in chat, and not participate in the boards otherwise. Trust and solid reputations are built on the interaction with the membership, and that requires more than on line conversation. But, to each their own....

BBS, I am really sorry but maybe if you were actually in the poker area for a bit you would understand. I don't know why all these people with absolutely no ties at all to the poker room feel they have to chime in. Maybe they are right and I just don't see it, but IMHO it is kinda bs at this point. Just opinions based on opinions. I respect everyones opinion, but maybe they should respect mine a bit as well. Specially since I actually play there.

Don

I think all he's saying is that only active members of CP should be playing poker. Don't let anyone you don't know play. Then they can't welch on a bet without putting their CP reputation at stake.

I don't know if that's feasible or not, but it's not unreasonable.

If explaining why it's best to out someone who just 'goes away' is needed, people may want think about visiting some other sites.

BBS is 100% correct, you out them.

Why, because it may happen again elsewhere.

Aside from being unacceptable behavior on CP, there are many other forums in the cigar community as a whole...and there are a lot of members active or watching many boards.

When it happens here, we try hard to not have it here.

Again, if it has to be explained...

CigarPass is a community...we all keep and eye out.

You've made it clear where you stand.

joh, I certainly understand that. But I feel like if that is not ironclad in the rules,. then it shouldn't be really enforced. I think it should be up to the individual. that is how I started in CP poker. I was lucky I guess in that the member that played that night let me in without and kind of rep. And I try to pass that on. Maybe chivalrous, maybe not. Either way I try to do for others what was done for me, and sometimes I guess we get burned for it. I can guarantee you that nobody that has done that has been playing with us either. The one exception would be pembroke who is making good on all issues and trying to regain his trust. Again, I apologize but not for disagreeing, I apologize for what could be my own misunderstanding.

No, I don't understand welching on bets and that you guys think it's OK. dkprlp said there are "several" folks that disappeared owing him sticks. Was he lying? Why hasn't this been handled? Other folks have said that folks come, lose, and disappear. Really? And you guys.....do nothing?

No I don't understand, and watching it happen won't make me understand. This acceptance of a complete lack of any integrity is troubling and casts a bad light on all the members of this forum. It makes us all look bad. I guess I'm old fashioned or whatever the hell you want to call it but at one time on this board, a person's word meant something and they got their balls busted if they did wrong. Guess those days are gone. So much for any integrity.

I'm over it. You guys "party on" and have a good time.

I understand that as well. My point being that maybe we haven't moved fast enough, but now I have the permission from Rod to post this and have a sticky of all non-paying people. I feel like that might even up the situation. is that what you are talking about? Because I just got the pm two days or so ago, and have not found the time to go through all the people involved or that play and get a poll about non-payers and or new rules additions.

Don

Regardless of participation in the poker room, BST Forum, Chat, Sports Forum, etc. the issue Tom is addressing is the "non-paying" debts owed not if the poker room is bad or good. The poker forum is an extension of CP and as such is subject to is rules and regulations much the same as the BST forum and others. One would not hesitate to bring to the communities attention the fact that someone had not kept up their end of an agreement for the protection of that community especially if the "welsher" is going to participate in other areas/forums. Bets are made constantly in the sports forum and when one goes sour and all avenues are exhausted it is taken to the community at large. Makes sense that if someone failed to follow through with their end in a poker game the bastard should be outed, dealt with and placed on the asshat list.

And my point is that I agree. The problem I have is that nobody is coming with a solution, just questioning what has happened. Which IMHO does not help at all. Question all you want, that is no problem here. Just please try to come up with something that might help in the matter. Getting rid of poker I suppose would do that, but is kinda a harsh issue since so many actually do play. Why not try to come up with a new set of rules or something along those lines that would help instead of just criticizing and then leaving off? That is all... I would love to hear any suggestions, as we are going to try to revamp the whole rules section.

Aside from being unacceptable behavior on CP, there are many other forums in the cigar community as a whole...and there are a lot of members active or watching many boards.

There have been several situations on CP where individuals' behavior on other boards has shed light on their intent here at CP. As a small community within the larger picture of the Internet Cigar Community, it is the Right Thing for us to out people who would cheat, steal, and otherwise harm our brothers and sisters. When wrongdoing becomes known on multiple boards and everything gets tied together, the wrongdoers are frequently persuaded to make good on their cheats and never visit those boards again.

I would like to think the point of what to do with people that welch on bets or trades regardless of where it happens is a black and white issue. That is one part of this whole discussion that baffles me. If someone is fucking over other members of the cigar community at large, be it in poker, sports bets or the board at large, they should be publicly exposed. Anything less is doing your friends a disservice.

Don, the DK fellow mentioned that this has happened before(welching). Now you are saying so as well.

Is it the same person?

Had the first person to know about this spoke up, it may not have happened again.
Either by the same person or another.

As far as not moving fast enough and posting something soon...it could/should have been done on the forum.

How are you to know this? That concern character....and/or experience.
At least a note to the admin would start the ball rolling or provide some guidance.

Even after a list is in place...posting a thread in the lobby will let EVERYONE know.
As it's matter beyond the poker room.

And I agree again Grateful. I just don't know what else would do anything. I think that a person that signs up, plays for one night, loses, and never pays, is the type of person that will not be back. But that is why I proposed a list of bad people. I know some people can sign up again with different IPs and such, but I am not smart enough to know any of that to catch those people. I guess we are wrong in not posting each and every experience as we attributed it to the poker room and not really the community as a whole. i think maybe, and I have posted this already as well, maybe having a FOG that plays poker or something should be a liason to the whole poker and community? Maybe that person would have the power and thoughtfulness to be able to combine both and make it work? Would that be something that is agreeable as well as having the thread with non-payers?

Don

Edit: To add that I heard of a few people, but never witnessed someone not paying. I have someone now that has not paid, but it has not been an unreasonable amount of time either. Hope this helps!

In two years of playing here, I have had one person not pay. He lost 2 games to me in early April. This member's screen name was drawingpro. He has not signed in since the time he lost the sticks and has not replied to a couple PMs I sent. I chaulked it up to as my own fault/part of the risk you take playing in this setting. I did not out him sooner because I figured it would bring no good. I apologize for being short sighted in that action or lack thereof.

When did it become acceptable at CigarPass for people to renege on bets? Weather it's a pass, BST, or poker, those people should NEVER be forgiven until they make good. What transpires in the poker room, chat, or anywhere else under the CigarPass.com domain is everyone's responsibility to ensure that things run smooth and bets/trades/passes are carried out ethically.

Dsav - please PM me a list of those who are delinquent and I will deal with them.

The poker and chat room are both extensions of CP; they do not make up the bulk of the site, or the site's primary focus. I don't have the resources to police every part of the forum; that's why we're a self-moderated community. Maybe it's time we scale back to a community, and forgo the chat and poker room for now. We don't operate like other forums - we actually encourage everyone to speak up with they witness foul play. That's what has always separated CP from the rest.
