I believe the story is, Pete didn’t approve of the wrapper color on a number of the Tat Blacks for the jar release, so put the lighter wrapper cigars in cellophane bundles. The wrapper on this cigar does seem to be slightly lighter than the jar released blacks. There’s noticeable oil, is quite coarse and blotchy with no prominent veins noticeable. It is very firm when squeezed and feels rather light in the hand, so I use the smallest ring on my Swiss Army punch knife as I’ve had a few Tat Blacks with a very loose draw. Sure enough, the draw is quite loose on this one with a musty tobacco taste coming through.

With fire to the foot, I take a couple puffs and an abundance of smoke pours from the embers. First draw is full strength with a powerful black pepper spice. Flavors are very good with vanilla and cinnamon being most prominent.

The burn is good with a medium to light gray ash forming that is loose and very flaky with bits and pieces falling here and there. Both the full strength and powerful black pepper spice mellowed at about three quarters of an inch in. Flavors became incredibly rich and delicious on the palate with tastes of toasted almonds, sweet vanilla bean, worn leather and a hint of nutmeg. An incredible finish is lasting on the palate, utterly fantastic.

At the halfway mark, the cigar takes another turn and goes back to the very full strength I got at the beginning as well as the powerful spice. This is one strong cigar to my palate, which it being early morning could be playing a significant role in the strength. The draw being quite loose doesn’t help, and I’m having to “sip” the smoke through or else get a very heavy buzz. Although there’s a lot of power, flavors continue to be incredibly rich with vanilla and toasted almonds predominant. The finish is simply fantastic, lasting long after exhaling.

My son arrives a little early, I’m taking him to a local college to find about his enrolling. I tell him to make himself comfortable as I finish up this cigar. The burn continues to be good with the ash remaining loose and flaky, however holds well until tapped off in the ashtray. Plumes of smoke come through in the loose draw and my nostrils burn slightly while exhaling with flavors on the palate as previously described, very rich.

Although this cigar I think could’ve used a good deal more downtime, it was still a fantastic smoke with good burn, incredibly rich flavors, and a lasting finish that was delicious on the palate. Excellent smoke!

Ah my favorite smoke! I've got one with the cello on in the humi as well. Wonder if there is really much difference. Thanks for the review!

I didn't notice any substantial difference between the two, but I didn't smoke them back to back. I might have to do this and see.

Nice review, Greg. The black label is indeed an excellent cigar. What is it about Tatuaje cigars that cause them to produce so much smoke?

Great review Greg! I can't wait to fire one of these up, I hope the draw is ok.

Nice review. This cigar has eluded me so far but if I can get my hand on one with some age you can bet it wont last long!!

The Tat Black has eluded me as well...but it's hard to find anyone saying anything bad about this stick. Can't wait to track some down. Thanks for the great review.
