Charleston, SC for THREE YEARS!
I was looking around for a good Air Purifier that would work in my basement that didn't actually take 3 days to work properly. I got two from Lowe's, and they suck. I ran across this one and was wondering if anyone had any experience with it, or could recommend a purifier for a decent price that REALLY works! I figure all I need is the 500 for my basement, according to the measurements.

From what I've HEARD, the ionic stuff doesn't work, so just stay away from that. I have one, and I don't feel, taste, smell, etc. a difference. You might look into the ones hospitals use (I forget the name).

Pick up a Csonka air cleaner. They work great. My parents have a couple at their house and I just ordered one for my place.

For what its worth I was looking into these since I have allergies but i decided to just buy the damn pills. Anyhow from my weeks of research if it doesn’t have a Hepa air filter of some sort it typically doesn’t work. Hospitals only use the ones with Hepa air filters. The Ionic ones do clean the air but instead of collecting the particles they simply drop to the floor or stick to the walls causing build up over time.

The one I have currently seemed like it worked really well...for a short time. After only 4 months of relatively light smoking, the damm filter is charcoal black and smells like smoke. Now when I turn it on, that smoke is sent out through the vent and it pretty much defeats the purpose. How do the Hepa filters get around this accumulation?

they dont, they need to be changed every 2 years. Typically they'll last longer then anything home depot has im sure. Besides has you simply tried cleaning the current filters u have, usually you can just open them up outside knock em around a little and whipe them down with a wet rag.

Dammit! I got mine at Low's...does that count. Well, that's what I get for going with the cheap ones. I wasn't sure if I could wash it or not, but I sure as heck will try...a new one cost's $75! screw that

My recommendation is the PM400UV from Air Quality Engineering.
Will set you back close to $1000, but it works as advertised!

I thought I'd put my somewhat educated 2 cents in this discussion. The first rule of air cleaning is ventilation, it's the 2nd and 3rd rule too. With the correct ventilator, you can use a hepa based air cleaner (with a charcoal pre filter, such as a Honeywell unit for under $150) and the hepa filter will last a year or more without the filter filling up with the "smoke smell" (the less expensive pre filters should be changed every 2 months).

Do you have a window in the basement? Calculate the cubic footage of the basement (square feet x ceiling height). A restaurant air should be changed once every 3-10 mins, a kitchen once every 1-5, so an average maybe one change every 3 minutes. So a basement 25' x 15' x 8' is 3000 cu feet. A ventilator rated 1000 cfm will replace the air in 3 minutes. Most of the smoke is ventilated, thus the air cleaner has little to do and will be very effective.

You can get a temporary window mounted fan (9" - 12" blade) for around $40 at Ace, Home Depot etc. or find something permanant(through the block wall) from a ventilating contractor.

The problem with Ozone generating machines is just that - OZONE.

Reports have found that the ozone in a room with one of these devices is significatnly higher than with out.
For those worried - I would - Ozone is BAD for you, especailly at the levels indicated.

Also, as far as an air purifier...it doesn't work. It adds ozone to make it seem like it works but ALL third party tests have shown the air to not be any 'cleaner' than before the device was used.

Sharper Image pays $525,000 to end lawsuit against CU

Sharper Image Corp. has ended a product-disparagement lawsuit that it brought against Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports, paying CU court-ordered attorneys’ fees and costs totaling $525,000.

Sharper Image sued after Consumer Reports judged the company’s Ionic Breeze Quadra air cleaner “ineffective” in an October 2003 report. A U.S. District Court dismissed the suit, ruling that Sharper Image had not shown our findings to be false. Because Sharper Image’s claims affected CR’s rights of free speech and press, the court ordered the company to pay our legal expenses. Sharper Image filed an appeal but later withdrew it, ending the legal action.

“Sharper Image’s decision to withdraw its appeal puts an end to a lawsuit that should never have been filed, over reviews that were truthful, carefully researched, and fairly stated,” said Jim Guest, president of Consumers Union. “This is a victory for every American concerned about the rights of an unbiased organization to test products independently, and to speak out in the interest of product performance and quality.”
