After a good day with the family, I went down to the lower patio for a smoke. I've been on a CC kick lately, so I told myself that it was time for non-cuban.

Tonight's smoke: A 2005 GoF robusto that I've had for six months that was paired with a nice Hefeweizen. This cigar, like many premium Fuentes, had impeccable construction and sported , IMO, one of the best looking bands.

I clipped this cigar-draw was perfect-and torched the foot. I initially noted the strong taste of white pepper, but that subsided very quickly. This cigar was very mild, almost refined. I thought for sure I'd experience the trademark Opus bite, but it was nowhere to be found. It wasn't harsh on the palate, almost refreshing. The ash was a salt and pepper mix throughout.

The first half of this cigar really was uneventful. The best flavors I recognized were those of roasted nuts and a mild tobacco taste. I'm not sure if this cigar mild due to a change in stages of maturation, but it didn't pick up until the beginning of the last third. Here, this cigar took on a woody profile with intermittent spices, which lasted through to the last inch.

I can't say I didn't like this cigar, but I can't imagine dropping $20+ on these. Perhaps it was somewhat flat due to being in a period of change, but I liken this cigar to good looking car with nothing under the hood.

Nice review Rob. I just had the Carlito DR a couple of weeks ago and, loved it. I would not classify it as a strong cigar either. Although, like the DC you smoked I tasted the wood & pepper profiles in the Carlito as well.

BTW, nice patio you have out back.

Good, honest review Rob! I have yet to try one of the GOF and it is exactly because of reviews like yours. I can think of so many more sticks I would rather waste $20+ on.

Very nice review Rob, and really cool pics

Great review, really great pics, and that patio is very nice. I'm smoking a GOF DC right now, and it's exquisite, i love that smoke. I'm guessing you had one in the flat stage, but then again, different strokes for different folks, i happen to be a lover of most all things Fuente :sign:

Great review and pictures but sorry to hear it was a disappointment. Looks like you have yourself quite the smoking area as well!

Thanks for the compliments!

Perhaps it was a flat stick...for $20+ that's a tough pill to shallow!

Great pics and review but I differ.

This stick is STILL my best NC!

I'm hoping to succeed it... one of these days!!!

Nice review, Rob. Well done. Now the question is, do I smoke mine now or hold it for later?

I found that the one I smoked was akin to a dulled down version of a RyJ Churchill. Was not worth the ticket price, but I do love that flavour profile. I might just stick to the RyJ offering though.

Wow, did I just dig up a thread or what? Sorry guys, followed a yellow brick link and replied without looking at the date.

Well, this is interesting. I've only had a few of each, but I can say with certainty that I love the Carlito GOF, and am not a fan of the Don Carlos. I would describe the Carlitos as cinnamon with a nice spicy tang balanced with an overall creamy texture. Awesome stick. The Don Carlos for me is flat, mild, and at times completely off.

I'll never buy another Don Carlos, but Carlito... any day.

The one I smoked in Brian's honor last night was a Carlito Double Robusto. And it rocked my socks.

I also think the Carlito > Don Carlos.

But both are good.

I got a Carlito sitting in my humi waiting for the right moment. Can't wait for that day.
