Shaving thread

The little town I grew up in still has a barber that gives old fashioned shaves with a straight razor and a warm lather. Even if your just getting a hair cut they do it on the neck and 'burns. I always wanted to get a full shave. Im a young buck at 25 but that seems pretty relaxing.

I never go to the barber anymore here though. I wear hats most of the time, and ride a motorcycle 300 days a year so worrying about fixing my hair and paying $20 a cut just dosnt work for me. #1 on the sides, #2 on the top, with the little woman trimming up the back. I do use an electric for convenience, and a quatro when I want a smoother shave.
 
I use conditioner as a shaving cream. A little goes a long way and with less pain!

Mach 3 Turbo.


Now, I have used a straight ravor a few times...way back when.
Also, I've always wanted a nice brush and soap set so Imay have to look again!

My local barber does a nice job with the straight razor when I get a haircut and when I hit Ybor City I try to get a cut and shave in 'King Corona'!
Ah, a cigar, a coffee and a shave!

Damn, I shave maybe 2 times a week. Guess I'm just not that hairy, or puberty hasn't really kicked in yet.
 
I use a Headblade on my dome, with the associated products for lather and shine.

I use

a Merkur Classic HD razor with Derby blades.
An Art of Shaving Silvertip Badger brush (I forget who makes their brushes for them)
A variety of good shave creams and soaps, including one of my favorites, Castle Forbes (a gift from SS 2007)

When I'm in a hurry, it's just a Fusion in the shower, no lather.
 
I am a mug and brush guy as well, shave about 6 days out of 7, wet shave in the shower.

I use a Mach 3 for the blade, and a variety of Colonel Conk soaps.

I am need of a new brush, badly...mine has split down both sides, and is shedding really bad.

Edit to add: every time I use a single blade razor it eats me alive. Are there any quality double blades out there other than the mass produced store razors?

I also suggest classicshaving.com. I bought my merkur double edge safety razor, vulfix badger brush, and extra blades there. I can't remember the site I bought my shave creams from, but I suggest geo f trumper and Taylor of bond street. I use both of them and the lavender GEO smells great. I also use the coral skin food from Geo. It's an awesome after shave. I typically only go through this process on certain occasions and usually go with the Mach 3 turbo for ease.

Merkur are good, buy a sampler of different blades at some of the online shaving shops and find out which suits your needs best.

That's the only stuff I use. I wish I was one of those guys that can take a can of Barbasol and a Disposable razor and go to town, but I'd look like I was sunburnt for a week. I also haven't been able to find an electric razor that doesn't cause my skin fits either. I went to one of their Barber Spas in Vegas (Mandalay Bay) a couple years ago, and I haven't used anything else since. For anyone that gets that "chewed up" feeling, and/or has a tendency to break out after shaving, I HIGHLY recommend their products. It's not just shaving stuff either, they have other stuff like Cleansers/Shampoo/Conditioner/Face lotions/etc. Placed an order yesterday as a matter of fact.

Also, if you're anywhere next to a Barber Spa, it's a great experience. Not only is it a great, relaxing shave, but as they're doing it, they'll tell you the best way to shave your face and what products to use based on your skin type and direction of your hair growth.

Before I joined the Marine Corps, I only had to shave about once a week, but now it grows pretty fast and I need to stay in regs. I shave the face 7 days a week and the head 4 days a week with this setup:
Dovo turtleshell straight razor
Art of Shaving badger hair brush
Art of Shaving Pre-shave oil (lemon)
Col. Conk's Amber
Nivea After shave lotion

Truefitt and Hill make good stuff. I use their lavender shave cream. You might also look into George F. Trumpers, Taylor of Old Bond Street and Castle Forbes. Yup, they're pricey, but you use less and they work very well. A tub will last you a long time. If you insist on cheap, Poraso is well thought of as well as Col. Conk. Personally, when I put a knife to my throat, I want the best I can afford.

Yup, it's just a start. Pretty soon you acquire acquisition disorders. RAD, SCAD, SBAD. I own 26 razors, 5 brushes and enough tubs of shave cream to last the rest of my like. Have you thought about what razor blades you're going to use? I like Feathers. They have a reputation for being extremely sharp and unforgiving, but I think that's BS. They're a great blade.

Right now the set come with a razor that fits the Mach 3....which I use.

I'm really interested to see the difference with the shaving soap and foam. Right now use conditioner (almost a balm condtioner). I've been doing this for years and it's worked great. (A barber told me about it once.) I spent under $20 and it lasts (and does a great job) for a few months.

I don't know about going the safety razor route...may go with a staight blade.
 
Using a Mach 3 is like smoking Swisher Sweets. :laugh: If you'd like to try a DE, I have an extra 48-49 Gillette Super Speed that I would be happy to send to you. Some, if not most, consider it the best DE ever made. Straights are nice but it's a wicked steep learning curve that involves blood, not to mention the high maintenance. While I think of it, making a proper lather is not as easy as one might think. Go HERE and watch the videos.
