got mine today, it came wrapped in cellophane (seran wrap) and in a small manilla envelope w/o bubble wrap, however the cigar looks good, only time will tell.

Got mine today also (even though I told him not to bother). Same packaging. Other than the fact that it was a little flat it looks better than several of the Esplendidos in the box I just received today. It is darker and oilier and smells stronger. The ones in the box seem pretty dry. I don't have nearly enough experience to spot a fake so I'm gonna have someone else look at it. If he is willing to send boxes 1st I might have to belly up to a plate of crow. I still have a problem with the lack of info in his profile and no real name on the package.

The consensus seems to be that these sticks are the real deal. That being the case I guess tonight I will be dining on crow fricassee followed by a nice slice of humble pie. :p

Vitasea, I hope you accept my sincere apology for my hasty and unkind remarks. Thank you kindly for the very nice cigar. Reparations shall be forthcoming. :)

Sorry for my delay....I received mine last friday. As with the others, it was a bit flat and very moist. It looked pretty damn good to me; but I am not terribly experienced in the matter. I also showed cigardawg and mrjinglesusa the sticked and they both gave it approval as well.

I am going to need to let it sit for awhile in the Humi....but will get a review out after I light it up.

Patrick

ps - vitasea, thanx for the smoke....I am sure we will all make it up to you!

a lot of you have said that the cigars arrived moist???
i don't have a lot of experince sending singles, should you not wrap them???
i always wwap my boxes so they do not dry out in shipping??
my humidor is about 65 by 65 :(

It's not a bad idea to ship a cigar a little wet. Better then too dry. Less prone to damage. And you should always seal them in plastic such as a ziplock or similar. Much better then plastic wrap and will help stabilize the cigars in transit. I am amazed the cigars were so wet from a 65% humi though ???

actually, I am too.
I've never seen a cigar this moist. I'd picture it coming out of a humidor closer to, say, 85-90%.
despite the level of moisture, no splitting on mine apart from the little bit (on cap & foot) which probably occured while in transit.
I imagine it'll take a while before it dries out enough to be smoke-able.

Nope. I'm reserving judgment until I smoke it. I'm rather surprised to hear that the cigars are from 2003 -- Vitasea, do you have a boxcode you can make available? They smell much fresher than that. Interesting.

Vitasea, I've got some pm's and posts wanting to do a box split. pm me a price list so I can feed these boys. I'm sure if the box split goes well, you'll start off WAY better than before.

???

You purchased these directly from the factory? Can you elaborate on that a bit? A "friend" who works there or such?

I really don't want to get in the middle of this, but I kind of am already so I'll say my piece and then leave it alone.

My buddy was invited by Doug (vitasea) to come over and see his place, have a smoke and a drink. Well, last weekend he got a free hour and drove over to make a visit. That hour turned into a couple more and he and vitasea had a very nice time, from what I'm told. They drank some Havana Club, vitasea did anyway, and smoked some cigars. If I remember right they smoked Cohiba Robustos. Apparently Doug has quite a set up. A converted bar for a home, with the walk-in cooler converted to a humidor. Jason said we would all die for this set up in our own place. His opinion of the cigars that they sampled were that they 100% Cuban tobacco, no doubt about it. He did notice a couple of boxes of things that as far as he knew, were not produced officially. He noticed mostly FEB '05 box codes on the stuff he looked through, though there were other codes too. FEB '05 codes are probably not hitting the retailers yet, but they are all over Cuba and vitasea was there recently.

Please, do not take mine or my friend's word as gospel, but from what I've heard and Jason has seen, the stuff is legitimate, though it may be coming from the backdoor of the factory instead of being purchased "officially". Doug sent me a very nice package to sample and I plan on doing that this weekend. Again, THIS IS NOT AN ENDORSEMENT OF ANYONE OR ANYTHING, IT'S JUST THE FACTS AS I KNOW THEM.

I should also add that I have invited Doug out to the LOL Herf and that I hope he becomes a member of CP as more than just a retailer of cigars. He sounds like he has quite a few good stories to tell and is a genuinely good guy.

Good info, Matt. This is the best "non-endorsement" endorsement anyone could ask for.

;) Maybe, but all I'm saying is that if you buy from him and are unsatisfied, don't blame me.

Well I had some to kill last night and it reached a balmy 34deg [c'mon, it's MN], decided to give the Esplendido a shot.

gotta say it tasted pretty darn good to me.
IMHO, the one I smoked wasn't 'micky mouse'.

will write a review of it as soon as I stop being lazy :D

bit added on:
Would like to say the number of Cohibas I have smoked [and known to be from trusted sources] can be counted on less than all my fingers and toes. There seems to be some variance in how the cigars smoked, depending on who smoked them. The one I had wasn't that bad, a decent smoke Not harsh, burned okay. But again, my Cohiba knowladge is pretty low so ...

[Espendidos box 25 now 440.00 box 5 sticks 100.00
Siglo IV now 285.00 box 5 sticks 75.00
Robustos now 285.00 box 5 sticks 75.00]

those prices should make CP guys who are getting ready to buy from you pretty happy.

Does anyone have a good return address for Vitasea? The one on the package is just a mail drop place and not his addy.

(Keep in mind that Vitasea stated these cigars were from 2003)

I smoked the "Cohiba Esplendido" that Vitasea sent to me. I'm afraid it was one of the most unpleasant cigars I've had the displeasure of smoking in quite some time.

The cigar was bitter, and not in an ammonia "sick period" way... it was just harsh, with none of the characteristic Cohiba taste at all. I smoked about half of it, and that was enough for me -- I tore it open to have a look at the tobacco inside, then threw it out.

My guess is that this is uncured/unfermented farm tobacco from Cuba; the taste of these cigars may thus vary wildly depending on whatever was thrown together into each particular cigar.

The band on the cigar that Vitasea sent me was quite authentic looking, and may indeed be the genuine article. I've seen cases where factory workers steal the bands from a factory, and have their own farm-tobacco cigars rolled for sale to gringo tourists.

Everyone of course should judge these cigars on their on merits, and make up their own minds -- I have no doubt at all that these cigars are not Cohibas. Caveat emptor.

Bottom line here is this... if you haven't the experience of smoking several boxes of the same vitola over a period of years, you should only buy from a place you know and trust beforehand. Even then, you will not know if you're buying the real thing. I've seen very well respected retailers who have been accused of having fake product at one time or another.

Not trying to kill vitasea's business, but if he's a legit businessman he'll understand. If you have ANY doubt, don't buy. I'll say that about all vendors.
