My Devil's Weed Review

LilBastage

Meat is murder! Tasty, tasty murder.
This isn't going to be fancy. I just don't enjoy taking pictures and all that kind of thing. This review is also based on smoking one cigar as I gave the other two to BOTLs that didn't get a chance to get the sampler. I know, I know, "You can't judge a cigar by one smoke," but I promised I'd post my thoughts upon smoking this cigar. I also fell in love with a lot of the cigars I smoke on a regular basis after just one example, so I don't think initial impressions are all that flawed. YMMV

Devil's Weed Raleigh
5x50
Got it in the sampler from Molina Cigar Co.

The construction of this cigar is pretty darn good. There was one vein in the wrapper that went almost from head to foot, but it didn't end up having any effect on the smoke. The bunch was not too tight and looked to be rolled very well. It was firm where it should be and had no soft spots. The prelight draw was spot on, but yielded little flavor.

The first third of the cigar was fairly uneventful. The initial few drags produced some nice nuttiness and a blast of cedar, but that quickly disappeared. For a while, I tasted absolutely nothing but tobacco. It was good tobacco, but that's all there was.

When I got to about the half way point the nuttiness returned and a little bit of that wonderful tobacco sweetness came through upon nasal exhalation. The cigar also took on a woodsy characteristic, kind of like freshly sawn lumber. It wasn't unpleasant, just something I've never smelled/tasted in a cigar before.

I got down to the last quarter or so of the cigar a little more quickly than I expected to. The flavor stopped and the smoke started to get just a little on the bitter side. It was also starting to get hot, so I let it go.

The cigar burned beautifully the whole way through, no construction problems to speak of.

I got absolutely none of the spice that many others have gotten from this cigar. That may be because I just spent the weekend pounding down Padrons at The Outlaw and I usually smoke cigars that are a little more "robust" in nature than this cigar seems to be. I found it to be very smooth and pretty unexciting. There was no noticeable nicotine hit for me, either (a definite plus).

It wasn't bad at all, but it just wasn't my cup of tea. I prefer a little fuller flavored, heavier bodied smoke. I like to chew on the smoke, and this cigar definitely didn't allow for that.

Maybe the maduro version I've read about will be more to my liking.
