April Newbie training pass?

I would like to participate if we can get someone with experience to host or help.

After reading through the February Newbie Training pass thread I thought we would need an experienced member to run the pass and maybe have one or two more added into the pass for everything to run smoothly. I'd be happy to try it, I just don't think I have the "know how" yet to run it myself.

Actually, SaxJazzMan started it, and he was just as new as the rest of us. He got one FOG involved, in the second spot, to make sure once he packed it up and sent it out, that everything was in order. So far everything has gone well, and there's only a couple spots left. It should be wrapped up in the next couple weeks, why not hold off until it's done, read through the whole thing to see how it went, and then start it off.

IF you are going to run this yourself, then please get the help of someone who has run a pass or two before (for reasons insight mentioned as well as others). If you are hoping to jump into one; I may have a solution. I've been thinking of starting a pass or two in the very near future....look for details soon.

There would be no way that I would even think of running this myself. I talked it over with an experienced member that agreed to help me but he also said that sometimes it's best to sit back and watch and learn too ( amazing the good advice you get here if you just ask!). I do appreciate all who have given advice on this matter in this thread and also to Blue Dragon for the possible opportunity to join one of his passes. I haven't been here long, but I know for him to give us the chance, having never been through a pass really shows what kind of person he is. Thanks to all of you.

Is this the norm for cigar passes or is this a slow point? I don't have any history to go on. It seems that most of the passes are invitational only and there's not many opening passes that new guys can jump into for experience.
 
It's a matter of finding an experienced member or two to help us through it so everything goes smoothly and the way this site would want it run. I had thought about starting the pass but I at least wanted to wait for the Feb. pass to finish to learn from it, gage the interest from you guys, and made sure I read as many pass threads as I could to make sure it was properly run. I've gotten the feedback from members through this thread that it needs to be run by someone who knows what they are doing to preserve the integrity of the pass and the forum. As long as the veterans of the site tell me this, then I'm certainly not going to go against their wishes and start it up myself.I would love to have one so we all can learn the proper way to do it, get some cigars we haven't tried yet, and gain friendships along the way, but I don't want to impose on any member by asking them to oversee a pass that they may not want to run. Hope this helps some, but I haven't been on here long enough to see a pass started to know how many go on or how long it takes to start one up. Hopefully we'll get some more input from others on your question.

One way to start to build a good trading reputation is to participate in a "noobie sampler trade". You'll be dealing with an experienced member, you'll get some fantastic sticks, and more than likely make a new friend out of the deal.

As far as passes go, there are both types; some have very high end sticks or other unique circumstances and are invitation only. Some are "first come, first served" but get limited to members known to the pass organizer. Some are wide open for anyone to join.

Keep in mind it's all about trust. If I'm going to put $250.00+ in cigars in the mail, I'd like to think that the person on the other end would treat them right, make responsible trades, pack them up right, and send them on their way promptly. I always try to turn passes around the same day I get them. It's not always possible, but it's the goal. The bottom line is that your reputation is everything. Until you get a couple of trades done, all anyone has to judge you on are your posts. Building a good trading reputation takes time, but it's not impossible.

Sounds like there is some interest and I'd strongly urge you guys to get a more experienced member committed to helping out if you want to organize a pass.

Another good point that was brought up to me was that if a noob were to start the pass and put in "average" sticks, when the pass got around the other new guys might not have many cigars and feel like they needed to put their best in after their take, the guy who sent out an average box of cigars comes back with a primo take and would be called out for it by the experienced guys. That alone says we need an experienced S/BOTL to oversee it and maybe start it. Because even though it might be my best intentions when I sent out my cigars for the pass, I wouldn't want people thinking I was just trying to improve my own collection at your expense.
 
Keep us updated if you get someone to work it along with you. It seems like there is enough interest...
 
Will do. Maybe during the time until it starts, all of us that are interested should go through and read the Feb. pass thread, the pinned threads on this board, and the info on the home page pertaining to passes so we can at least say we've read about the proper way to handle a pass when it's our turn.

I would like to try it for the experience. I assumed that passes were the whole point of this website but I see little going on.
it also seems than when something pops up, everyone comes out of the wood work and it fills up quickly.
Based upon my E bay experiences (160), I feel that most people are honest and will play by the rules if they truly want to belong to the group. It would also seem to make sense for a newby pass to go with lower to mid price smokes as long as they are quality, and worthwhile at least to cover postage costs. No scratch that, basically it is not about money at all, it is a given that it will cost us shipping costs simply to end up with equal value but different cigars. so all participants actually lose in the long run monetarily. It doesn't seem like rocket science to get a pass going. All of the instructions to get a pass going are on this website.

Have a 1-week deadline to get them shipped and another week for all to arrive. No limit on the number of people, just create a second pass or third pass if needed. Box shipping order is the order that the cigars are received. That way, everyone shows good faith by sending smokes in advance, no one is out much if something happens, and everyone that wants in gets in.

Just out of curiosity, under such a system wouldn't the experienced passer be getting raped by having to ship out numerous high cost boxes with no return? Also where would the boxes end up when the last participant made their puts and takes? There is a reason things are done the way they are here and you might be surprised just how easy it is for one jerkoff with bad intentions to screw up a pass or trade. Even if most people are honest, as you say, all it takes is one scumbag to cause a loss of hundreds of dollars in cigars. Give yourself a little time around here to get used to things and you will find there is a good reason things are structured the way they are.

I, too have been looking to join a pass on this board, so if this ever gets off the ground, count me in. I agree that we need an experienced member (I was happy to see Blue Dragon potentially offer his services), but if we're going by eBay ratings, then I may be left out (only double-digit feedback for me) :sign:

One 'less than reputable' person has already offered to help organize this pass. Based on your ebay experience you've just offered to have everyone send him 3 cigars and maybe more for a second or third round.

Sorry, I think you missed the part of my post stating that I would prefer an experienced passer to get things going.

My comments were merely suggestions to be possibly considered by this democratic forum, I was not trying to make up any rules. Possibly if any suggestions are followed, the FOG could put and take his own sticks at the end. If everyone donates upfront to get it started, maybe at the end we could donate what is left to the guys in Iraq or Afganistan. Again, just something to consider along with everyone else's ideas.
