Looking for a "house dog" for the cigar shop.

If you are looking for a friendly and lazy dog, go for an English Bulldog.
They are great pets and don't require much exercise.

If the dog will go home with you at night, a Basset is a great choice. They're very loyal to their owners (unless they start tracking something :D ) but pretty welcoming to strangers. Once out of the puppy stage, they are very laid back. They also don't take up all that much space compared to a lot of other medium sized dogs.

Lol guys, I don't think he's going to lock the dog up like a gimp when the store closes.

You'll have to excuse us Basset owners. We're as quirky as the breed, and it takes a special kind of dog lover to own one successfully. There's too many of them in rescue because people didn't do their research.

Doc.

Doc's dead on there. I've always wanted one and I've read up on the breed for years and they need tons of attention. A good friend of mine has one and he takes it with him all the time. It'll be the next dog I get, but since I've got three already, my plate is full for awhile.

snip.... Just be prepared for a lot of shedding!!!!

And drooling!!!!!

Well said Doc, and very true. The Greyhound we rescued as example was a challenge to be sure. She was just over 4 when we got her, she hated hard floors and we have hardwood through the main floor, they don't know what glass is, she's never been on stairs before and she'd piss in your eyes if she got a chance when we first got her (try house-training a 4 yo dog!!! ??? ).

I tell ya, it was an experience, but a very rewarding one.

I second the Bull Mastiff idea. My local has one, and he lies right in front of the door as to make sure everyone notices him. I usually spend more time playing with him than I do looking for cigars.

Hey Redbeard, which B&M are you referring to?

Any Mastiff breed would be cool, they are VERY friendly, Boxers are very puppy like for awhile but still cool. Bulldog would be awesome! Damn expensive though, look into one of the rescue programs and get an older dog so that you don't have to mess "Shop Training" the dog.

Cool idea!

I smell a contest for the name! :sign:

Marc, pick me! Pick me! I’m a lazy breed and I’d really love to live in a cigarshop!

ok, answers to a few questions...

1) yes, the dog would be taken home each night.
2) we have wood floors so i would prefer a dog that doesnt shed alot.
3) i dont want a dog the size of a couch, so the bull mastif is out. something in the 20-50 lb range.

thats for the input thus far...

Alright, go to the pound and pick out the coolest dog you see, he'll love ya for ever! As far as shedding, get this stuff called Lipiderm as a supplement that goes on the dogs food, used it and the dogs I have hardly even shed.

Well, Basset is out. I know I've been covered in hair by my friend's dog.

Yorkies don't shed... :whistling:

Well a dauschund would be in order then. A mutt from the local shelter is also a great choice.

Boxer.

Check out one of the boxer rescue places and you could get an older rescue dog that will be very mello. When they are young they are little crack heads but once they hit about two they mello out nicely.

I have always had dogs, muts, labs, goldens and such, but my police officer buddy rescued an abused boxer from some inner city thug that he took to jail, and he has been the best dog I have ever had. I think the rescue dgs really understand what you have done for them.
Anyway, boxers are very loyal, and extremely well tempered especially with children. My two little ones can climb all over him and he does not blink an eye. I was kind of worried bringing a 50lb+ dog around my little ones but once I started researching I fealt a bit better, and now after two years with him I completely trust him. They are great. I am a boxer man for life, I will definitely have another later on.

I dunno, the smell of a dog in a cigar shop would be a turn off for me.

Get a big ole Maine Coon Cat. They're friendly as hell, great with people and they don't stink.

Actually I had a Maine Coon that used to follow me to school when I was a kid. Also, that cat would roll over when you'd whistle... pretty cool cat.

Besides, wouldn't you worry that your dog would get lung cancer from all the secondhand smoke?

Someone posted recently that studies are showing that second hand smoke is negligible as a carcinogen. I wish I had the link for you.

A lazy cigar shop dog will probably just smell like smoke after a while. Plus he can chase away all of those intrusive Coon Cat's that mosey on by.

Fish

LMAO @ Howard.
