I'm headed to Vegas in September. We're staying off the strip (friend's timeshare), and most of us have never been (8 in our group). What I'd like to know is where to gamble, drink, and what to do, if you're new to Vegas. About half the participants are pretty fresh out of college, so most of the stuff we do can't be too pricey. We'll definitely hit casa fuente. Any advice about clubs and strip clubs (not really my thing but you only live once), restaurants, buffets, limos/transportation, gambling, skydiving, golf, etc will be appreciated.

It really depends on your spending limits imo. You can do Vegas cheap but if you want to do restaurants vs. buffets, golf, skydiving etc. it's gonna cost you. How much would you say an acceptable dinner price is for you/your crew? How long are you willing to wait in lines to get into a club (Do you have any women in the area to help?) What sort of limits do you want for gambling and what sort of atmosphere?
 
Also:

1) Will you have a car or will you be using limos and cabs?

2) Where is the timeshare located?

3) What games do you plan to play? (Tables/Machines)
 
I can really only answer for myself and guess for the group. For dinner we'll probably do a nice one or two, but I'm more interested in good values for low budgets. Since some of these guys will be pretty strapped, some good buffets for cheap would be helpful, or other similar options.

We will not have a car, cabs and limos only, but the off strip condo is walking distance (.8 miles) from the strip. I realize we'll not want to walk this distance, but we might try anyway. I figure once, and they'll come to their senses.

I like blackjack and craps. Not sure about the rest, maybe just slots at low limits. Blackjack and craps, I like to spend no more than $20 a hand generally, less if I'm drinking a lot(which is nice to say, but hard to practice). It would also be helpful to know which casinos are friendly to those that want to play low limit games. For instance, with craps, I like to play $20 or so a hand, but when you bet $1 on pass, and $19 on pass odds, I guess you're really talking about a lower limit table. Honestly, and probably obviously, I don't have a lot of gambling experience. Certainly not enough to advise my group.

For the clubs, the group may split, and since I'm not single I'll probably skip the dance clubs. Are there waits for the strip clubs? I've heard some of the guys talking about clubs called sapphire, peppermint rhino, and treasures. Some of the guys also talked about just seeing a burlesque show instead. I figure once will be enough for most of us, so whatever has the best group deal, etc might be best. Then the ones that didn't get their fill can do their own thing.
 
Spearmint Rhino imo. Go there. For buffets, most of the strip hotels have nice ones for like 20-30. The Bellagio has a great breakfast buffet for like 15 bucks or so and the Rio has a pretty eclectic dinner buffet for twenty something (although I hate going that far). The waits for 'dance clubs' are generally absurd unless you have a lotta women with you. I am married and impatient so the only way I go to those is when I have someone who can hook me up with jumping the line. For nicer dinners there are endless places to go. Anywhere from Carnegie Deli or Margaritaville for a massive dinner under $20 to Mesa Grill or Gran Lux for a bit more to Joel Robuchon and Guy Savoy for hundreds a person. You can find $10 a hand BJ anywhere in Vegas and $10 minimum craps most places. IMO you won't be able to play $1 on the pass line anywhere in Vegas, the cheapest I have seen spread on the strip is $3 at Casino Royale and $2 at Binions or the Nugget downtown.

Sounds like we could call for free transport from the strip from many of the big name clubs, and then after a few dances, the guys will get tired of being hassled and what to do something else, perfect for my situation.

I'm not a craps player but I'm pretty sure you can't bet less than the table minimum on the pass line which is usually $5-$15 for strip casinos. Also, most limit you to 2X3X5 odds. Check out Casino Royal for lower limit craps and higher odds. It used to be X100.

For lower priced meals there are food courts in almost every large casino with the usual McDoanld's, SBarro Pizza and Chinese Panda type places. Check out Krispy Kreme donuts for the best hot glazed donuts you've ever had. Buffets on the strip aren't cheap and the ones that are suck. MGM Grand offers an all day buffet pass for $29.99 on weekdays, slightly more on weekends. You can go 3 times and they check ID so no sharing one pass. The dinner buffet runs $26.99 so $29.99 isn't terrible if you like buffet food.

I don't know how much help I can be regarding transportation to/from your condo. I could give you specific casino/restaurant info if I knew where your condo was located. Taxis and limos are going to get expensive quick.

You asked about dress codes on the last pm. To play in the casino there isn't much of a dess code. Shirt, shoes = Service. If you want to get into clubs you'll need long pants and something besides sandles or tennis shoes. Most of the nicer restaurants have the same code but I have seen it broken many times even in places where dinner runs $150 each. Personally I'm not comfortable eating in nice restaurants in shorts and a polo shirt, but like I said I have seen others do it.

Bill's Gambling Hall-Bill's has a free shuttle to the Gold Coast where you can get a decent low priced buffet. It's about a 5 minute bus ride on $10 by cab.

I'm not a big stip club guy but have been a few times. 1st off you can get a free cab ride to most of the nicer clubs because the clubs pay a kickback to the driver. They will also wave your cover charge to get in if you arrive by cab. Seems crazy but it's a fact. Once you get in the cab just ask the driver where he can get you in for free and ask him that his fare is waved. I had the most fun at Saphire, your mileage may vary.
 
I am concerned about taxis adding up. Since we'll be sharing, hopefully it won't get crazy. If it gets over $40 per person per day, we'd be better off getting cheap rooms on the strip. We're three blocks back on E Tropicana Ave, so between NYNY and Excalibur (so says google maps).

The site I gave you (you linked to it above) is the most professional site around for Vegas info. There are 1000's of Vegas Junkies posting there every day with very little BS to put up with. It reminds me a lot of this board.

+1 on Bill's Gambling Hall for low limit craps tables with good odds. Flamingo's right next door and has higher limits but lower than all the big casinos.

It's walking distance...but you don't want to walk it? Is .8 miles really that far?
 
It is when its 120 out and the herds of people are moving at ~.2 mph
 
I personally don't see a problem walking that far myself, but lets say I'm in a black tux, or lets say I have some friends of larger carriage, or lets some of us are carrying others home...
 
My two cents, if you're single go to the pool at the big casinos. Visit the Hard Rock! Tons of women...If your trying to keep money in your pockets, when you ride in the cabs ask them for free passes to clubs. It will take some conversation to get them, but they have them. I like "the bank", tao, pure, tryst for music and drinks. Get drunk in the casinos (free drinks, while gambling) or room before going out for the night. You can bring your drink down in the casino, in the cabs, drinking on the street is legal but not casino buses. I believe if your riding in a car, you can have a drink per person but don't quote me on that.

Strip clubs are for rich guys, because they are very expensive and if you are really trying to get a girl, hit the casino floors after the club. Tons of drunk, horney girls running around looking for some dick. I have never went to vegas by myself and not found something by the end of the night. My vegas days are over, met my fiance there :love: She slept on the couch and I didn't get any.... :blush:

Favorite time in vegas was 3am, playing blackjack with john elway, smoking and drinking for hours..
 
You can go downtown (Freemont St.) or to the suburb casinos (Station Casinos, etc.) for cheap gambling, but it's not going to be as fun as going to the Strip.

If you and most of your crew hasn't been to Vegas, then plan on spending a good part of one day/evening just bouncing around to all the mega casinos up and down the strip. You'll be surprised how much fun it is to just wander in and out of the big resorts the first time there. So get a cab up to the north end of the strip (nearabouts Wynn) and make your way back to Tropicana Ave by way of going through the casinos. Or with no cab, I guess you could start from near Tropicana Ave, go up one side of Las Vegas Blvd going thru the casinos, cross near Wynn, then make your way back down the other side of the street. Lot of walking, but worth it if it's your first time there. You may stumble across some cheap table games that way too (less likely on a Friday or Saturday night).

As for eating cheap, you might want to wander slighty off the Strip, there can be some really good deals. Like the not-on-the-menu $6.99 steak special at the restaurant at Ellis Island Casino (a block east of the strip on Koval Lane just south of Flamingo Road). There are lots of other cheap eats in places like that (out of the way off the Strip).

The Cheapo Vegas website (cheapovegas.com) has some pretty decent info on cheap gambling, eating, and whatnot.
