Limewire sucks, IMHO.
For every search you make, you get hundreds of hits to wade through. And most of the wading is through crap. All that time spent trying to find your file can be better spent downloading.
And, no matter what you are looking for, you're innundated with porn (and worse.) I know, I know, for some folks that's okay (and exciting) but that's not what I want.
Limewire is also a security nightmare. There's several scripts and apps that claim to fill in limewire's security holes, but none work. Your computer is totally wide open to the world when you use limewire. (And, BTW, the "keep it secret" function of limewire is hogwash - it doesn't work well at all, and not at all for anyone with even limited snooping skill.)
Like you mentioned, viruses are abundant.
Using bit torrent negates the virus problem. When the original torrent file is uploaded, the system breaks it into chuncks and logs down the parameters. If some a-hole attaches a virus to the file, the client will not accept the file because it doesn't match the original.
You can control which ports you open for uploading and downloading the files in bit torrent. And, downloads are much faster if you also upload. This reward system ensures many folks "seed" or share the files.
