Looking for a decent scotch.

I don't do a lot of bourbon. I've got some pappy 20 I'm saving for graduation.

If I don't like it I've got plenty of scotch to keep me busy!!

Get yourself some Laphroaig or Ardbeg. Might as well jump right in with both feet. :whistling:
laphroaig will be my next purchase for my birthday yesterday I ended up with.

Glenlivet 12, buffalo trace rare egal, (enjoyed both allot) and buffalo trace bourbon cream (haven't had that yet but the person that bought it for me said it was good).

Glenlivet will be nice. A smooth and easy to approach kind of scotch. Laphroaig is a can't miss Islay scotch for sure ! If you like peatr and a smokiness you'll like it very much!

If you find any get your hands on a Bruichladdich waves. Should not cost much and is a great bang for the buck! IMO

There are very few people, in my experience, who like both bourbon and scotch. Ray is one of the few.

Do you find that's the case with cigar smokers in general, too, Doc? Seems that if one comes up here in a discussion, the other is always brought up, too. Both certainly pair well with cigars, imo. I don't like all kinds of either one, though.

I am not sure what you pay in the US but I would recommend a standard Glen Moray or the entry level Arbelour, both are easy to drink on the rocks and won't break the bank.

If you can find it, The Speyside is a great 12 year for a hell of a price. A local shop sells it for $27 a bottle. Total Wine has it for $32 last I checked.

Not everyone has to like all styles of Scotch. I'd consider Aberlour a'bunadh jumping in with both feet too.

Agreed. When I started out drinking scotch I didn't enjoy or appreciate the Islay's. Now they are about the only thing I drink, and I find myself not really enjoying some of the Highlands and Speys as much any more.

They were wrong unless you are a woman, a frat boy or someone who thinks that they are drinking bourbon. Real bourbon has nothing in it. No Red Stag, Gag, Fag, No honey no iced tea or any of that other crap they are trying to pass off as bourbon.

........buffalo trace bourbon cream (haven't had that yet but the person that bought it for me said it was good).

That made me laugh. Bourbon Cream Liquor, really??? Honey this, Cherry that, now cream? I keep wondering if there is there a market for this and if so, who the helll buys all this crap?

I remember my first real dram was Balvenie 15yo, I remember liking it. So I went out and did some research on what my first bottle of real Whisky should be. I ended up with a bottle of Macallan Cask Strength. I dont't recall where I was getting my information from but, they recommded adding a tspn of wather in a snifter and rolling the snifter over an open flame to open / warm the liquid. Needless to say after doing this the nose alone was enough to make my virgin eyes water and the drinking experience was not all that much better. Months later I ended up grabing a bottle of Highland Park 12yo and I was off and running but, man I'll tell you that first dram was a beast and I ran away from whisky with my tail firmly between my legs and jumped right back in bed with good ole' Jack Daniel's and Evan Williams. Keep your chin up go slowly and before you know it you will be craving and salivating for the water of life.

Glenfidich 12 was my very fist scotch, I too was a bourbon drinker before trying scotch. It was much different then bourbon but I also thought the glenfidich was a great place to start. Also the balvenie 12 double wood would be a good start as well.

My first two Single Malts were both recommended by AVB
1. Dalmore 12
2 Balvenie Double Wood

The Dalmore was a bit too much too soon, but I want to revisit it.
The Balvenie is my favorite Scotch
