So I may be obsessed with finding the perfect RH for my new wineador... and so be it :) But I was just wondering if anyone had tried this. Since there seems to be an epic debate between RH (or personal preference) 70%RH or 65%. So what about in between? Is it possible if you have a 1/2 a jar of 65% RH beads on the bottom and 1/2 jar of 7-% RH beads on the top and get somewhere around 68% RH in the middle?! I know CRAZY question, just wondering if anyone has tried it or am I just that obsessed with RH?

You'll be the first. Make sure to report back.

You are just obsessed. Keep it below 70% throughout and you will be good.

Eventually they will regulate at 65% as the 65% beads draw water out of the 70% and recondition them to 65%. The law of averages doesn't apply here.

If you really want to read up.....http://cool.conserva...2/wn23-206.html

See page 4: You could recondition it to 68% and it would hole\d there. But I guess depending upon the saturation level it would either end up at 70% or 65% eventually. http://www.nps.gov/m...ogram/01-08.pdf

^^This. With beads (or Boveda packs) the higher RH will be sucked up by the lower RH trying to level itself out.

If you were to do the 2 types of beads you will be in a constant fight to regulate RH.

...yes, you're obsessed.... :p

OK, most guys that are new at the game are, too. I know I was. Truth is, get 50 experienced cigar guys rounded up and ask them what their preferred RH is. You're going to get answers from 55% to 70% or maybe higher. It is a personal preference, to be sure. Truth is, a point or two....just doesn't matter.

I believe the only absolutes are that over 70% you are risking mold, and over 70F you're risk of beetles hatching goes way up. Even then, you'll get debate on that.

My cabinet has a setpoint of 65%, 68F. I know for a fact that there's a point or two difference between top and bottom. I sleep just fine....

I think some folks get too wrapped up in the "tools" and don't pay enough attention to how their cigars are smoking. Get a couple of tupperware containers. Place 5 each of the same cigar in one with a 65% boveda, and another one with a 69% boveda. Let them sit for 3 weeks minimum. Then smoke one from each. See what you prefer.
I believe that Boveda might still have a tolerance, and I"m too lazy to go look it up, or see if it has changed. I think it was +/- 2 percentage points. so a 69 might go down to 67 and up to 71. a 65 might go as low as 63 and as high as 67. (check their site). I use the 65s as I have seen too many instances of mold when a 69 was used.
