Need some song recommendations!

I didn't mean music from some one elses youth. :sign: I meant serious music. Jazz, classical, Afro Cuban, Brazillian. etc.

Doc.

I'd like to see some classical recommendations Doc. I've found it a tough genre to search out. Here's a few currently in my iTunes:

Carmina Burana
Agnus Dei - Barber
Pavane - Faure
Last: The Lonely Shepard - Zamfir
Moonlight Sonata - Beethoven
Canon in D - Pachabel
La Valse d'Amelie - Tiersen

You folks need to get beyond the music of your youth. Few people do. Make the effort it can be rewarding. There's so much more out there besides what was produced in your teens and twenty's.

Doc.
I always found it interesting that most often, when I run into folks I went to high school with, they STILL listened to the same "stuff" we did back in the 70's. Have to agree; there is so much great new stuff....

Cheers - B.B.S.

There is also some old great 'stuff'. He was looking for some fav's - some 'must have' tunes.

That's what I gave him. :D

Now if you want to start a thread about music - I'm up for the discussion! Basie, Ella, Frank...all good. Benny, Taj, Brubeck, Gatemouth, Willie Dixon, The Blues Bros., Metallica, Ozzy, Cake, Nine Inch Nails...CSNY - all good stuff!

Try anything by Bartok. Bartok is God. You might find him slightly inaccessible but give him time. listen for the middle European folk themes and how he composes around them. I really don't know anything about classical music but I know what I like. ;)

All music is serious IMHO. It doesnt matter what form it travels in. I took a Music Appreciation and loved the class. We covered from the 17th Century to current. I've found my taste in music changes as I age. Always have loved all forms of music. Except I dont care for Rap or the so called new country music. I can listen to it if I have too. I've been on a 2+ year kick of Russian music. Sad I dont speak Russian but it just shows you dont need to understand it to appreciate it.

Sorry... misunderstood. Sounded like you were talking the age old "ewwww, that music is old... listen to newer music" discussion.

Shorty Rogers Afro Cuban Influence is definitely a must!

Trilok Gurtru for jazz
Dixie Dregs for fusiony
hows about ethiopiques? great ethiopian jazz instrumentals!

Tons of stuff out there!

Hey guys, didn't mean to offend anyone.....just pointing out that in addition to the "classics" there is a lot of new music that sometimes gets overlooked....nothing more.

Regards - B.B.S.

All good stuff here, good discussion too.

I'm a huge "Music" fan and own everything from 50cent - every Metallica song made - Mozart - Hank Williams Sr. - Musicals (PoTO) - techno and dance. So every suggestion, be it oldies or newbies is a good one for me.

As a matter a fact I prefer all the differing opinions, they all fit ok in my iPod.

Yeah, iTunes sucks though, but it's all I have.

Southern rock:

Skynyrd- Simple Man
Outlaws- Green Grass and High Tides
Allman Brothers- Ramblin' Man
Blackfoot- Highway Song

Dropkick Murphys "Fields of Athenry"

They actually did a remake of this song to honor Sgt. Andrew Farrar, Jr., USMC who was killed in action in Iraq on his 21st birthday, January 28, 2005. They also did a song called "Last Letter Home" in his honor also on "Warrior's Code."

Other Dropkick Murphys tunes:

Captain Kelly's Kitchen
Heroes of Our Past
Barroom Hero
The Gangs All Here
Boys on the Docks
Caps and Bottles
Do or Die
Worker's Song
The Warrior's Code
The Dirty Glass

A simple way to see what some critics think is to look at Rolling Stones top 500. Mostly good stuff but there are a few I can't explain why they are there.

Something newer...Hmmmm

Raconteurs
Built to Spill (IMHO earlier albums are better)
Modest Mouse (same as above)
Iron and Wine
Clap your hands say Yeah
Doug Martsch
Electric President
Flaming Lips
Frank Black or the Pixies
The Postal Service
Husky Rescue
You'll know by the trail of dead (not death metal)
The Magic Numbers
Sufjan Stevens
Ween
Wolf Parade
Youth Group
Sigur Rois
The Shins
Thom Yorke (new solo album)
Death from above 1979

Just a couple of the bands on rotation here at my computer.

Slight Thread-Jack ???

snip....Canon in D - Pachabel....snip

My daughter used to play the flute in the High School band, and she had an amazing natural talent for it. One Christmas Concert they played this and I still get chills when I hear the song. The middle part with the flutes "talking back and forth" was done by my daughter and her best friend.

Two months after that, I had the pleasure of escorting my daughter to her first rock concert. Who'd we go see??

Jethro Tull!!!

Thread-Jack over, we will now return you to your regurlarly scheduled programming. :whistling:

Jethro Tull!!!

No offense to Jethro Tull, but I still can't believe they took the first ever Grammy for Best Heavy Metal Album over Metallica's Black Album.

That has never set right with me, hehe.

WOW...

no one even mentioned Ministry Psalm 69

a true classic for anyone with a need for metal
