Neglected humidor and cigars inside

Ok, without getting into specifics my humidor went uncared for for about 4-5 months. It used to be at 70% humidity perfectly and then no maintenance was done. I just popped open the lid and its at about 32-33% humidity. For now I've put a small rubbermaid cup with distilled water in the middle to try to help bring back up the humidity. I did some searching in this forum and the humidor forum for rehabbing the cigars, but didn't find much. Any advice that can be given would be much appreciated. :) Thank you in advance!

I'd say re-hydrate slowly... over a month or more probably....

You will be able to bring them back to smoking condition but IMO they will never taste as they should. Once you have let a cigar dry out it is ruined in my eyes. Hand them out to moochers who don't even like cigars. That'll show em'!

yeh thats my plan with the cup of water. bring the humidor back up to appropriate humidity level and then continue to maintain that and let the cigars percolate for a couple of months.

I tried this before with a batch of cigars... somewhere here I posted on it. You can get them back, but they will never be to their old glory as Phil says. Once the oils dry up, they are gone forever. Doesn't mean they are unsmokable... but relegated to being yard gars, fishing gars, golf gars... stuff you don't mind dropping, throwing away, etc.

Plus, please don't put them in any bombs, trades, passes, and so on. That would not go over very well... UNLESS the person you are sending them to is FULLY aware of what the history of the cigars are.

Yeh hopefully they'll get rotated in on the golf course or something. Shame too, I had some nice ones in there :(

Oh and yeh, definitely a no-no for passes etc.

Also, the reason why you want to slowly rehydrate them is due to a number of things which mainly include the sensitivity of the wrapper. I have had cigars that split right down to the middle once they were placed in a normal %'ed humidor (from a mail order). Best of luck! :)

I figured the easiest way to bring them up slowly is to let that cup of water stay in there until the humidor gets itself naturally back up to 70% and once it reaches that I'm going to swap in some heartfelt industry beads in a tube deal and use them to keep the humidor at 70%. I'll check on em after a month or so of that. I hope I can get them back. I've got a couple of Arturo Fuente Anejo's I was saving.

Throw out the cigars, and buy new ones, IMHO.

Send em to me. I'll let ya know if they're any good :whistling:

I tried to save some Opus that a friend of mine let go. I had somewhat success but like other have said they will never be the same. Try and see what happens, good luck.
