Dear Good People,
I'm beginning to date a fantastic guy who really enjoys smoking cigars. I'm an ex-cigarette smoker, so I have at least an indirect appreciation and respect for this. My normal habit would be to give it a try myself - and I am tempted, but I have heard that former cigarette smokers tend to inhale, which makes it quite dangerous. I also don't want to run the risk of becoming addicted to nicotine again, since I was a very heavy smoker back then and quitting took many years. So I guess I am happy to keep him company while he's enjoying a cigar, but can't share that with him.
The problem is that my nose seems over sensitive to certain smells. Although I often enjoy the fresh smell of cigar and pipe smoke hanging in the air, the smell when it is older 'third hand' is really hard for me to be around.
Is this something that I will become accustomed to? if things move along with the relationship, something that can be managed? I don't want to seem intolerant or make him self-conscious, especially since smoking is something from which he derives a great deal of pleasure. Is there something I can do to get used to it?
I apologize, sincerely, if this offends anyone. I mean not to be obnoxious, but get some ideas on how other non-smoking/smoking pairs successfully manage olfactory differences.
