What is a premium cigar?

Ok, seriously... I think some people take "premium" cigar and "super premium" a little too far. What cigars do you consider to be premium and what cigars do you consider to be "super premium"?

Domestic Premium - Opus, Anejo, VSG, Padron 64/26
Super Premium - Non stanard Opus, VSG ER, Padron Millenium

What's your opinion.

If you do a search, you'll see this question has been rehashed about 12,000 times. There isn't one set standard that everyone abides by. Different budgets allow for different definitions.

I think a premium is something that you want to save for a special time. A super premium is something that you get for a special occasion. Some of the so-called "super premiums are so out of reach for a lot of people that the tier drops down on a sliding scale.

If a cigar costs more than your lunch, it's a premium cigar. If it costs more than your dinner, it's a super-premium.

Note that cost and quality/taste don't always go hand in hand. There are some truly excellent cheaper cigars, and there are some truly overpriced more expensive cigars.

I don't think it should be relative to your income. If you're broke that doesn't make a Curly Head a super premium cigar just as driving a Pinto doesn't make a Civic a luxury car. I know there is alot of grey area with what a premium cigar is but there should not be loose interpretations of what a super premium cigar is.

I'm fine with what the 2 terms means to you but when you are offering cigars in a sale or trade you should consider how other people perceive those terms.

The same logic can be applied here. What's the difference between a "special time" and a "special occasion"?

so by some of the above definitions a monty#4 would not be a "super anything"...yet a 20 year old monty#4 would be super duper premium to me.

sorry to thow a monkey wrench in but i think a person should decide after or during a smoke if it is grade A or A+ or A++ or whatever.

btw 20 years ago monty#4's were about 1.25$ :)

derrek :)

Of course its relative. If you make enough money that it becomes a non-issue, then you may find a $20 Opus to be your boring everyday smoke. Your "premium" smoke is now 80s Davidoffs. Your "super premium" might be cigars that can only be purchased with armed guard delivery.

The flipside is true as well. If you barely make enough to cover your basic needs, then a $20 Opus might seem like a fairy tale smoke. A curly head may very well be super premium as their everyday smoke might be bundles of seconds.

I agree, but this has to be determined on a per-transaction basis. It will rarely, if ever, be the same from one person to the next.

Special time is something I do by myself, specail occasion is with other people!

:whistling:

it all depends on the person ;)

Heres how i define the two:

Premium: Anything that costs more than 10 dollars a stick and is just a so-so smoke.

Super-Premium: Anything that costs more than 10 dollars a stick and is a "knock your socks off, max the credit cards buying boxes, stockpiling and whoring as many as you can fit in your humidor" smoke.

Premium and Super Premium IMHO should refer to taste, feel, smell, draw etc. as opposed to price. As has been stated before, price doesn't always equal quality. I have smoked some $8 Hoyo 1066s that were better smokes than a $15 dollar cohiba.

Never gave it too much thought, but generally I figured it like this:

Premium - Handmade in the $5-10 range, lower end ISOMs
Super-premium - Handmade over $20, most of the ISOMs

Sticks that fall in the $10-$20 or so would be dependent on things like rarity (Anejo), scarcity (OpusX), universal acclaim (Padron 26/64), personal tastes (Blunts  ), etc.

I was watching CSI the other day, and they referred to a Perdomo Reserve as a high-end premium cigar, so take that for what ever it's worth

(the past 2 days CSI has a few cases directly involving cigars, one mentioning the lack of propylene Glycol as an indicator to the cigar being Cuban in origin - which was kinda weird because they were assuming that the cigar was fresh from the factory, and that only domestics are humidified with the solution - or maybe I'm just noticing these things more these days)

I always figured a premium is something I cant afford now and a super premium is something I will never be able to afford

In my opinion, one of the very best cigar values available today is the Tabantillas Gran Duque Maduro. I consider this cigar to be an excellent premium cigar. The packaging for these fine cigars is also outstanding. Enjoy!

My bundle cigar is a 30th Anniv. Cohiba Robusto!!

A premium cigar is one that I pull out of MY humidor!

Premium / Super Premium is not soley a function of price. If that's the case, then Gurhkas, Greycliffs, Davidoffs(dr), Partagas LR, and Aurora would all be considered Super Premium. They are not. Not to be a prick here, but these, IMHO barely crack the Premium category. They are all readily available at most tobacconists. They are good tasting (to some people) but more hype than substance.

If you take those same dollars (say $12-$15/cigar) and apply that to habanos, you're looking at Trinidad Fundadores, larger guage Cohibas, Sir Winstons, Monarchas, and a number of the ELs. And some of those wouldn't even be considered Super Premium, based upon their availability.

But overall, looking for an easy definition, I'd concur with the original post.
