What's in your glass....2017

I've been on a Bourbon kick for about a year and a half. I pretty much love anything from the Buffalo Trace Distillery:

Blantons
W.L. Weller (Antique 107 and the 12 year)
Eagle Rare
Buffalo Trace

and of course Pappy Van Winkles. I have a bottle of the 10 year, the 12 year and the 15 year. As Kevin7 once said about Pappys:

"I wouldn't build a golden temple for it but it's damn good bourbon."

I really like the McKenna 10 that Devin mentioned above. In that same price range I like:

Two Star
Lazy River

I'm not a big fan of some of the better knows such as:

Maker's Mark (the 46 is much better than the standard Maker's Mark)
Bulleit

Woodford Reserve is okay but there are so many other good choices in that price range that I haven't bought this in a long time.

I drank Woodford Reserve almost exclusively my first few years with bourbon, but it got a little "tinny" for me after awhile. Now I like Knob Creek in that price range, and Walking Stick or Blanton's if I'm spending a bit more. Ridgemont 1792 is a good "daily" in the less expensive offerings, even it they did pimp up the bottle for some damn reason.

Try the Maker's Mark Private Select.

Oh, I forgot about this one, another great bourbon at a very nice price!

Not that it matters, but that was the first time I drank it. We went to a "whiskey bar" after dinner and it was recommended by the bartenender (intentional) as a reasonably price but good bourbon and I would have to agree but not really sure what the retail price per bottle is....~$50? Never really see it at the stores around here. It will be on the list of things I look for when shopping however.

I saw it available on line for about 80 bucks. I'd figure it would be in the $50.00 to $80.00 range.

New rum . . . . Dos Maderas 5 + 5. Aged in the original casks for 5 years, then shipped to Spain, apparently, and aged in Spanish sherry casks for another 5. There's also a 5 + 3 but the color difference was so dramatic I spent the extra $10 for the 5 + 5.

It's really, really good. :D

Rich, fruity, not overly sweet, nicely complex. Goes GREAT with cigars. Weather here's still too hot for Scotch but rum seems to really fit the bill, and this one's perfect for a Scotch drinker.

That looks sexy. I see a local spot has it for $45. May have to get it.

It's good on the rocks but it's just lovely neat. Had a couple Glencairn snifters of it last night and you can really taste the sherry casking that way.

Had a little Pyrat rum and Diet Coke with an old VR Unicos. Sadly I'll have to get more Pyrat

Blantons is fantastic, Eagle Rare is fantastic, and Buffalo Trace is great at the price point. I keep around 30+ bottles of bourbon on hand at all times, and I try to make them all different. I love to try new things, and I love to have options when I reach for my rocks glass. I'm really into Rye right now, I just can't get enough of it.

Some of my favorites, in no particular order just for good measure:

Rye:

Sazerac (My go to Rye for daily drinking)
Whistle Pig (The best rye I've ever had)
Willett (An amazing rye)
Woodford Reserve Rye (This is very good, and no more expensive than regular Woodford)
E.H. Taylor Rye (I get a bottle every Thanksgiving)
Angel's Envy Rye (The maple syrup notes on this are off the charts)
Bulleit Rye (I don't order a Manhattan without it....ever)

Standard Bourbon and Whiskey:

Makers Mark (I still think it's one of the best at the price, similar to Buffalo Trace)
Gentleman Jack (Not a bourbon by definition, but this stuff is damn good)
Jack Daniels (Call me whatever, I love this stuff over ice)
Bulleit Standard (Just a good solid drink)

Shit I wouldn't touch even with your mouth:

Jim Beam (All of it, fucking swill, worst shit I've ever tasted)
Wild Turkey (I've tried it over and over again because my dad enjoyed it, but it sucks, it just plain ol' sucks)
Evan Williams (Not the worst thing in the world, but it's far from quality)

There's probably some I'm missing in all categories, but this is what I could think of off the top of my head.

I've had a sampling of everything in the Antique Collection (BTAC), and it's all very good. But not worth the market price...which is usually triple or more than retail.

Pappy? Had the 12 only and it's good, but again, not worth the price people want for it.
