Wild Turkey Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey, 101 proof, may come with box packaging around the holidays but usually not. Standard style bottle, about $18-21. No age statement.
As the topic desciption says, American Whiskey XL. This is a big in-your-face Rye bottled at a solid 101 proof. Even with a slight resurgance in Rye's popularity most producers only need a day (one day) of production to bottle up enough product for a year and Austin Nichols is no exception. While there is no age statement on the bottle and Rye isn't required by law to be aged any minimum amount, it is thought that Wild Turkey Rye is about a 6 year old product.
The nose on this jumps out of the glass to grab you with wafts of rye (no kidding), honey, flowers and a bit of spice. A forerunner of the tasting but not an exact match. That first tast is big, bold, clean and floral. Spicy rye coats the tongue before the alcohol hits. A slight burn releases the cachet of floral notes like lavender and berry. All this with a slight malty undertone completes the taste. The finish is long sweet and spicy with the floral taste giving way to the Rye spiciness and charred oak sweetness. While older Ryes may be more subtle, few are more flavorfull. With a semi melted ice cube this whiskey releases even more spice and sweets and makes for a heck of a Manhattan.
Not everybody's cup of tea for sure but if you are looking for a big bold flavor at a fairly small price, Wild Turkey Rye is it. An ACE
