Spring is in the air and the warmer weather is upon us, it's time to remind everyone that when ordering cigars this time of year...keep in mind a few thoughts...

When ordering cigars in the hotter weather...the shorter the journey, the better the chances the cigars arrive in good shape.

As apposed to picking the vendor based solely on price, consider selecting a vendor that is geographically closer to you...even if they are a shade more expensive...to ensure that everything arrives quicker, intact and properly humidified. What's the difference of a few dollars if the product you get is damaged and unsmokeable. Receiving damaged goods = hassle with a return.

If the deal is too good to pass up and the vendor is on the other side of the country, call the vendor and ask them to put a Humi-Pak in there to at least ensure the proper humidity. If possible and you are saving a few more dollars on the sale, pay a little extra for expedited shipping as apposed to free shipping that takes a week to arrive while it's 80 to 90 degrees outside. If it's taking an even LONGER journey ( ), upon arrival of the cigars, it's a good idea to store them in your freezer for 36 to 48 hours, then transfer them to the fridge for another day or two before putting them in your humidor.

Think before you order and you'll be rewarded with great smokes!

Honestly....I try not to do it. Only "furry" smokes I've ever got were shipped in the dregs of summer.

Also, that way when box after box shows up all winter, I can say "...but, honey, I CAN'T buy cigars during the summer months...??..!!.."....

...advantages of having a cabinet, lots of room. Sure sounds good, doesn't it Gary...??...

I've always ordered whenever I pleased from wherever and haven't had any problems to date. Maybe I don't order enough?

I could see where that could happen. When I order from the devils site it takes about a week to get here. Probably not good.

I hate getting cigars in the summer. Sometimes I wonder if the extreme heat kicks them into a fermentation. Too many times I gotten them in, and the ammonia was kicking, and the flavors off. Blends that I am quite familiar with not tasting right, and then never tasting right a year or more later. Of course, the beatle risk goes up, and I suspect in some cases or conditions, mold may get a start. If it takes more than 2 or 3 days, I don't order.

Thanks for this post Gary this is something I have never considered. I will makesure I follow this advice if I place any orders this summer. I am sure you just helped out a few newbies!

Good notes, freezing is an option I started using last year. Too hot down here and I can't justify putting a window unit in my office to regulate temperature in my humis. Froze em for three days, dry boxed for one day, then back into the regular mix.

I often wondered about this since they leave my deliveries on the front porch in direct sun light. Thanks for the advise.

Good post Gary. I didn't think about the heat issues with the summer shipping. I usually opt for the expedited shipping when I order anything, as I don't want the smokes to sit longer than they need.

Another thing I have done when ordering close to the weekend, is call the vendor and ask them to hold shipping until Monday. Don't want to have the smokes sitting in a warehouse all weekend if they don't need to.

Great post, Gary. I agree with and have been practicing both of your suggestions when indicated.

I also order only sealed boxes in the summer. The summer might be a good time to support a local B&M if their prices aren't too much more than online (plus shipping).
