Hi guys, I am sick of the gym and not seeing the results I want, I was thinking of taking an MMA class, specifically a Brazilian jiu-Jitsu class. Anyone involved in this stuff? What can i expect? Not so much looking to actually fight, just want to get buff. Any info is appreciated.

Not any suggestions, but my old roommate is fighting this weekend in UFC 70, free on Spike:

UFC 70

Heath vs Machida

Same as Brando as far as advice... but my buddy fights with the IFL right now and gives lessons. Well, actually you just pay him to beat the crap out of ya'.... LMAO!!

The Janitor..... He'll be on tomorrows night's episode on My TV Network....

Hey Rob,

I haven't done much BJJ, but have trained in Aikido, TKD, and Krav Maga. On top of that, did some VERY informal Muay Thai, Boxing, and stick fighting.

So far, the most PHYSICAL (though not NECCESARILY practical, though not necessarliy NOT practical, either...that's just a different discussion) changes and best bet for gettig into better shape, has been Krav Maga. We start each class with a great half hour "warm up" which often involves cardio, sprints, drills, jumps, push-ups (100 in 4 minutes max) crunches, defenses (also knwon as air-raids), jumping jacks, etc. The end of the warm-up usually sees me stretching out and changing my first shirt. The remainder of the workout is more drills and skills, and might work one or two main muscle groups very well, depending on what you are working. Feel free to PM me, as I love to chat about this stuff.

BJJ required one to already be in decent shape, flexible, etc where I took it. It would, depending on the school and the types of classes they run, very possiblly be just as effective as the KM school I am in now.

If you are out of shape.....prepare to be smoked!! brazialian ju jitsu is extremely physical and it will severely kick your ass at first! stick with it and you will get results quickly!

True! Depending on what shape you are in, and how hard you are willing/able to "push it", BJJ might be a rocket-ship to a higher level of fitness....a painful one, though!

Brandon...who is your roomate? I'll be watching UFC this weekend! Sweet that they are offering this one free!

David Heath

I've seen him in several bar fights, watched many of his fights in person and he's a great fighter. Hell, even watched him knock some dumbass out w/ a left jab at a softball game. This one looks to be a great fight for any of the UFC fans, plus it's free.

If you watch, pull for Dave, he's a great guy who deserves all this.

I am UFC fan, watched the past 8 pay per views (Randy Couture is an inspiration for me), the BJJ classes I am looking at are beginner up to advanced with specific beginner classes and I am looking to get my ass motivated and into shape. I am not obese (170lbs, 5'9") but am not happy with how I look and feel, plus i would like to maybe kick some ass as well. Thanks for the replies, will PM you Josh if and when I get into this, still doing research on instructors and class costs.

Good luck Rob, just take it slow at first :sign:

that's what my wife keeps telling me.....slow at first.
thanks brandon

Beginner classes in BJJ are a VERy good thing. It's not like in Aikido when you can train next to an advanced student. It would be frustrating for both of you otherwise.
It WILL get you into shape. Especially if you take the dedicated beginner classes and let the instructor know that you want to get it hard and fast, he will most likely help you do so, within reason, of course.
As for the "kick some assness" of it, remember that BJJ often goes to the ground. In the real world, that is VERY often a VERY bad place to be. But knowing BJJ is a great asset when a fight does go to the gorund or when the contact is very close and you need to know how to handle it. Nice when someone tries to wrestle you. Unless, of course, it's a wrestler trained in BJJ...then you better out strike him!

Though I have boxed competitively for the last 20 years or so, I have also done some MMA and vale tudo stuff. It all depends on what aspect of MMA you are going for. I have worked with the Gracie groups here and, as you may know, that is largely submission wrestling/grappling based. So, because MMA is precisely that (mixed), what are you really looking to get into?

set some physical goals for a year in advance. I think that is one of the biggest mistakes that people make when they try to get in shape. 2 months of going to the gym can seem like an eternity, but when you look at the bigger picture, its really not that much time.

if more people would realize that getting in shape takes time, I think more would stick with it.

just my 2 cents

Unfortunately there’s very few true MMA gyms, they all have there strengths and weaknesses. MMA will get you leaner because its crazy cardio but only weight lifting will build muscle. You need to decide what you want to train and who you want to train with. If you don’t have any intention of fighting I wouldn’t recommend a top level MMA gym. Also as far as your current gym there different ways of working out, I do power lifting competitions, so I train much different from say a bodybuilder would. If you have a background in wrestling id say go for ju jitsu.

As for UFC 70 I was going to make a post about it but you all beat me too it, I LOVE UFC and hope to fight in it one day. I’ll definitely have the guys out to watch it. I think Randy is a great guy but CRO COP will win this fight and beat randy like a drum.

linky to where I am considering...about 6 miles from my house.

Yep, that's what MC was talking about, in regards to the Gracies. Ground work is definitely an experience and having experience in wrestling will help a little as well.

Yep, and seeing that Tim Burrill is affiliated w/ the Machados, you can expect almost a mirror of the Gracie program. If that is what you are going for and you want a little insight into that program, you can check out the Gracie Academy website. Again, it is almost entirely ground work and submission based. As a workout regimen, is it good? Yes, it is. But it also depends on what you're after. The Gracie program is a different hybrid than that of say, Bas Rutten and/or Ken Shamrock, who largely are Pancrase based programs. I have been out to the Lion's Den in Cali, and can tell you that it was more intensive than the Gracie program. So take a look around and get a feel for what you want out of it.

And yep, bfreebern is dead on...experience in wrestling will be a huge plus. In addition to boxing, I used to wrestle back in my high school days (I guess that explains my appreciation of Matt's "outfit" :sign: ), and my experience from that was hugely beneficial when taking on grappling and pancrase regimens.

IIRC, Tim was one of the first Americans to train under Machado.
How does the Pancrase system differ workout wise from the Gracie/Machado workouts?
