Thinking about getting a new cutter,,,Have seen the palio and xikar arguments. Anyone seen the El Casco cigar cutter..Any comments on any of these? Leaning to wood grain Palio
 
Get a Wenger SAK. Ya can't open your craft beer with a Palio or Xicar.

I've got a Xikar xi2. No complains, and they stand by their productions very well... Free sharpening of the blades if they get dull, etc... Comes with a lifetime guarantee and mine came with a free mail-in-rebate-type cutter sheath. For the 25 I paid for it on eBay, no complaints. Gotta say though, I've heard great things about Palio.

I've opened a few beers with the Xikar, but if you aren't careful, you'll fudge the blade pretty easy, so I don't recommend it ;P Seen my friend tear his apart trying this.
 
I have a couple of Xikars around. On every one I've ever owned the return spring wore out and broke. It's laudable that their warranty is ironclad, but I don't care. It pisses me off that the fooking springs always seem to break. I keep my carry knife as sharp as I can and use it to cut my cigars most of the time.

You can open a beer with damn near anything, there no need to risk damaging an expensive cigar cutter.

I've opened bottles with other bottles, table tops, belt buckles (not the novelty ones with a bottle opener), car doors, door handles, Bic lighters, even a piece of computer paper (that one was mostly to see if I could do it) If your a college kid with a case of beer and no bottle opener you will find a way to open the bottle.
 
I'm loving the Palio right now. I have used the Xikar from the synthetic to the Stainless and they all work fantastic.

Never used the SAK cutter so I can't comment.
 
I recently picked up a Palio. I haven't used it a whole lot since I bought it (just haven't been smoking much) but I think I have a decent feel for how it compares to my Xicar.

Overall it is a real good cutter. The blades are extremely sharp, I think they are sharper than Xicar blades, and the actual cut itself seems to be a bit smoother than my Xicar. With the Xicar I find there is sometimes a bit of an edge left on the cigar where the blades met. With some cigars this can be a problem, My tongue starts to play with it a bit and depending how well put together the cigar was the remainder of the cap falls apart. With the Palio I don't get that little ridge.

As far as construction goes, I don't feel like it's put together as well as my Xicar. On Cigarmony the description for the Palio says: "The Palio Cigar Cutter is NOT a standard ABS plastic, but a composite" and I can tell its not a cheap low grade plastic, but in the end it is still plastic. I much prefer the feel of my metal Xicar when I'm just holding it or it's in my pocket. The Palio has come apart on me a couple times, something I didn't expect from a high quality cutter, but it goes back together in a couple seconds, not much of a big deal. I would compare the quality of the construction of the Palio to an Xicar Xi2, good not great.

Overall I am very happy with both of my cutters, the Xicar has a better feel to it and it feels like it is put together better but the Palio provides a better cut. Another advantage the Palio has over the Xicar is if you find that you didn't cut enough you just spread your fingers and its ready to go, I find my Xicar can be somewhat annoying having to reopen it with the button.

I don't really have a preference over the two, they are a tie for second over using my Case pocket knife, its put together a lot better, provides a better cut, and is even sharper than either of them.

One final note, if Palio ever comes out with a cutter that is styled the same but has a metal body I will purchase it in a heartbeat. That would give me the feeling of the Xicar but the cut of the Palio. Hopefully they will eventually do that.

edit: Well, in hindsight, it maybe because I had drank a few before hand... ;D
 
I own both a Palio and Xikar. They both work about equally well. I prefer the looks and feel of the Xikar, but on the downside they sometimes fall apart as the screws can loosen and fall out. Xikar does stand behind their product though. You cant go wrong with either imho.
 
I'm eventually going to upgrade from the $1 POS plastic single-blade cutter I have now, but I was wondering about Xikars. Everyone talks about the bulletproof guarantee/warranty, but how quick is their customer service turnaround? When a Xikar has to go back home to be mended, roughly how long are you stuck using an auxiliary cutter?
 
It took exactly 1 week from the day I sent mine in until I had it back in my hands last summer. That was for pretty much a complete overhaul (I dropped it and ran over it with the lawn mower. Don't ask... :blush:).

We had to use a hatchet to open a keg once. I have a palio and couldn't be happier. Not the prettiest of cutters but definitely effective. I bought a buddy one a while ago and now thats all he uses, he has a xikar as well. Just my .02.

I have a buddy who once used an Angle grinder to get into a keg. Fortunately I have only been in a situation where I had a keg but no tap once and I was able to make a few phone calls and borrow one. After that I bought one and it is either under the back seat of my truck or at my buddies house (almost the only place my friends and I ever get a keg)

I've used my teeth for cigars on the rare occasion I don't have a cutter or my pocket knife on me (I almost always have a pocket knife on me) and I've done that once for a beer, It works but is one of those things you can easy mess up and regret :( That was one of the reasons I learned how to use pretty much anything to open a beer, a table top or a lighter is much less risky for the teeth. :D
 
Had a xikar which mysteriously broke and neither my wife or my son knew how..... and when I say broke it was in four pieces.

Warranty replaced it no questions asked.

But I find the blades on xikars to be to thick and don't give a clean enough cut for me.

Still the best cutter I have is this El Cheapo single blade I got for a buck or two. Super thin blade, sharp, basically disposable and it cuts super clean. I don't care if I only get 50 cigars out of it. For the cut and price I'll just get a box and throw it out every time I change the blades on my razor.
