La Flor De Baloney Challenge

Got mine today as well...plus something that smells like...horse shit!!!! :0 Letting them rest for a little while and then will light it up. Thank you...

-Fetter

"Horse shit"? There was nothing in my package that smelled like that. It smelled much better. :D

OK...manure...the only way to know it is the real thing!

-Fetter

I was got stuck behind a truck carrying what I think was pig shit. It was the most GAWD-AWFUL smell I think I ever encountered. I was almost crying after being behind that stench for several minutes. No matter how much I backed off, the smell just wouldn't leave the road.

Better than the chicken shit smell over here...................

Flor de Baloney Maduro - Made for JR by Villazon Factory.

I am assuming this is maduro. JR says it is "blended with Honduran, Nicaraguan, and Dominican fillers, each size is available in either a medium brown EMS wrapper or a dark brown Maduro wrapper. The only difference between this brand and the "vintage" cigars being foisted on the public for up to eight dollars apiece is the price. We’ve set our retail prices right around half that of the phony-baloney brands - and took another 33% off on each bundle of 25!" This 5in. X 50rg. robusto sells for $49.95 per 25 ct. bundle. Ironically, you can buy the Vintage cigars he's "mocking" as seconds at cbid for less than that! But then JR may have these on the auction block, too.

Physical Characteristics

size - 5in. X 50 rg.
shape - robusto
feel - very firm
wrapper color - dark brown
appearance - small veins, light tooth, double cap, decent wrap with no gross imperfections
pre-light - light barnyard

Notes

light - Xikar cut, even light

1st third - Starts right off with good amount of flavorful smoke. Draw and burn are good. Flavor is sweet cocoa and light leather. I am pleasantly surprised - I like it. Draw could be a little better but flavor and body are good and a sweet cocoa finish that lingers.

2nd third - Burn has been razor sharp so far and ash is light gray holding on easily for an inch or so. Flavor profile hasn't changed one iota. Very simple but pleasant flavor that would be a great yard gar or daily inexpensive smoke. Nice aroma. Cocoa continues to be dominant flavor.

Last third - these are not too different from the Villazon seconds CI used to sell. The draw is easing up some as the length gets shorter. Everything is just about as perfect as you could want from a bundle cigar, IMO. The cocoa flavor is less dominant in the last part as the leather comes to the fore. Still very tasty though! It's not getting too hot, either. Just got my Famous order delivery! They are frozen. No beetle worries here!

Summary - I would buy them if I can get them cheap on auction. $50 is higher than I am used to for bundles online. But I like this cigar. Nothing to rave about; but, as bundles go it's AOK in my book.

construction - 9/10
draw - 7/10
burn - 9/10
flavor - 7/10
complexity - 4/10
finish - 7/10
value - 6/10 (at JR list)
handmades start with 30 points - 30/30
total score - 79/100

Nice review Vortex. Should we start a seperate thread in the reviews forum for these?

Nice review Vortex. Should we start a separate thread in the reviews forum for these?
Thanks. A new thread may be a good idea but I defer to our host, SJM! There are pros and cons.

There a pros and cons but as a newbie here I am not fully aware of all the protocols. Keeping it here as the advantage that one could follow the entire historical thread how we got started and the humor that went along with it. If nobody minds and CP protocol is not violated, it may be a good idea to keep it all here.

I smoked my Flor De Boloney today and can sum this cigar up in a few sentences:

Very tight draw...
Very nice, mild, sweet flavor...
Good looking wrapper...very close to the Indian Tabac Maduro?!?!?
Nice smoke to the nub...

One very distinct similarity...

This is exactly the flavor and strength profile of the Indian Tabac Maduro Tubo...EXACTLY!!!

If you have never smoked one...go out and buy one...they are cheap...smoke them back-to-back. No difference!

This is my opinion and I am sticking to it!!

-Fetter

Thanks Fetterjohn. Good pick up on Indian Tabac. It will be interesting to compare the two.

Ok here we go, I brought the laptop outside so this will be my immediate impressions.

Starting off very mellow. No real noticable flavor or anything but it is very light with a slightly sweet aftertaste (thats the maduro talking)

Still tasting extremely mild to me. Even with a nose exhale I get nothing. I can taste a little coffee but its sort of like that coffee where they have used the same grounds for 8 pots.

Ok it didn't pick up much more. Put it down in the last third because nothing was changing. This really isn't a bad smoke honestly. The construction is good, the burn was absolutely perfect and the draw was great. The only thing was it was way too light and one dimensional for my tastes. I could barely taste the thing! Maybe I just got a weird one, we will see with number two. Will update next week when I have the second one. Thanks SJM for letting me play!

You could ask Rod to move this thread to the Review forum if you want to. Would keep it intact and put the reviews in the proper forum for future generations to read.

So far I can just about quote ya Insight but I managed to finish this one.

(well here goes)

Had some extra time this morning so I grabbed a glass of water and sat down to smoke the first of two Flor de Baloney cigars. I picked the first one based on condition, it had a few spots where the wrapper bunched up and a small tear near the head. As was mentioned by Vortex, there is a mild tooth on the wrapper. Also it definatly smells sweet like a Maduro but there is something in the scent that can't be placed.

The first half of the cigar tasted more like sweet-n-low and left slight minty flavors on my tongue. It was so smooth I thought this one could be inhaled. (no trials were made in that department) Not once did the cigar taste bitter or even present a touch of spice. The cigar is about as light as it is smooth leaving an almost non-existant aftertaste. The ash has kept solid, not flaked, and there has been nothing unpleasant about the cigar.

As for the second half:

Nothing has changed, the cigar is still rich and sweet. Perhaps less like the sweet-n-low and more like tobacco which is good. There are brief moments of a leafy flavor and the taste gets a bit stronger as the cigar smokes. Oddly, after the third quarter the sweetness gets very mild and there is a mild bitterness as now all that i'm really getting from the cigar is a slight nicotine buzz. Things definatly get a bit stronger but with the few flavors now gone, it failed to leave me with that desire to keep smoking.

Personally I would have bought these for the band but i'm not sure about an entire bundle. Aside from that, all other thoughts held back for the second trial.

I agree with all of the reviews so far. I do have to say one thing...in my limited experience smoking cigars (3 years) there is one thing an aged wrapper and cigar will impart, it's elegance and subtle changes in flavor and strength throughout the smoking experience. This one has neither of those qualities. Not abad cigar...just not up to par with the Rocky 1990 or 1992.

La Flor De Baloney Review:

Just getting over a cold, my nose is slightly stuffed.

The cigar clipped beautifully, and pre- light draw was good. I can’t say I can pick much of an aroma up from smelling the cigar. Not much of an aroma from toasting the foot either.

This is an extremely light bodied cigar with little flavor initially. The cigar is well packed and has a nice even draw. Half way through the cigar has shown me no character at all. It delivers little if any flavor and tastes like a hundred other cheap cigars.

This cigar lacks any character and is not at all memorable in flavor. I would neither recommend nor purchase this cigar myself. If I remember correctly it sells for about $50 a bundle and at that price is not worth the money. This cigar has a lot less flavor than the Connies at half the price. To compare this cigar to a RP Vintage is ludicrous, there is no comparison. I would say it would be like comparing a Hundai to a Lexus.

As I predicted before this started this will be one of Lew’s cutouts next year. Even at half the price I could not justify buying this cigar. Lew should be embarrassed thinking that this cigar could match up to Rocky’s Vintage line. He is either an idiot or a liar, you will have to determine which.

I only got one of these to try, so you will have to take this review as my final word on the subject. Thanks for letting me in on this review, and for saving me from buying a whole bundle myself. Oh, and thinks for making me only smoke one of these!

Some good reviews guys!! I do agree, if this was half the price it would be a reasonable smoke, but the competition is too good out there in bundles.

Well this morning I had my go at the Flor De Boloney.
Paul (BT), I agree with your thoughts on this stick 100% bro!!!

The stick was a pretty good looking stick IMO, and it was VERY firm to the touch!
The smoke burned pretty well considering it's travels, but there wasn't a whole lot of smoke. Big plumes of smoke are important to me, and this stick didn't have that.
As with almost all of my half assed reviews... I couldn't distinguish any specific flavors. There was one flavor though that was very distinct, although it wasn't a very enjoyable flavor IMO, it was there the whole smoke!
Overall, I think this smoke is just too much on the mild side of things for my liking. It might make a ok 'change of pace' smoke for me... but at about half the price they are now!
I forgot to mention, I did only recieve one stick, so I won't be able to do a follow up. But, if I have the chance to pick another one up, I will to do a follow up review.

Thanks again bro for letting me be a part of this, and for the 'package pressed' ( ;) ) tag a long!!!
