Yes. Send yourself a PM. Then open/read it and delete it. It should fix itself.

Rod this version of the software also has this error.
 
Quick fix: Send yourself a PM, then delete it. It will recount your PM's and will then be accurate.
 
I have myself on ignore so I can't send myself a PM! Yes Chris it probably is me, LOL
 
Happened to me today. Got -1 new messages.

Sending myself a PM fixed it.
