I think the real question here is could he have written anything else on his sign? He can grip the sign so must have opposable thumbs making him a primate. He's obviously capable of expressing many emotions :) :( :p ;) ??? :0 :angry: :love: etc.... This however is his only writting sample for us to use to interpret his emotions. I don't think he is capable of written language.
