My friend went to the DR for a week, and brought these back for me (it should be mentioned she knows nothing about cigars, so I can't make a judgment on how/where she got them). They're both pretty dry as she just put them in her suitcase. Some flaking of the wrapper going on, as you can see.

First, a Vista Real, which I've never heard of, and can't seem to find any info on.

And this Cohiba (minus the red dot). Can anyone tell if this is a knock-off or not? As you can tell, it looks pretty rough, and has a large vein running down the side.

Any thoughts?

Cohiba is a fake. If the words DOMINICAN REPUBLIC under Cohiba dont warn you.

The Vista Real cigar is a bundled smoke produced In Tamboril, D.R. and is pretty much for the consumption of locals as I beleive it does not get exported. I beleive the line of cigars they export is the ASHE brand.

Would not the Cohiba be fake only if it were attempting to claim it was something it was not? It clearly states "Republica Dominicana" on the band and therefore is not trying to pass itself off as an ISOM Cohiba. So I would not say it is a "fake" per se.

It is however a blatant copyight infringement and a knockof of the Cohiba brand.

The Cohiba is a knockoff, If I am remember correctly they where made by General cigar and where sued by HAbanos SA for infringement rights. They are no longer allowed to manufacture the Yellow Banded Dom Rep Cohiba's. They are still allowed to produced the Red Dots however.

The Dom Rep Yellow banded Cohiba's where popular at least in the bay area of CA from about 2000-2004. I can't remember when exactly the lawsuit happened but I am sure you can google it and find something.

General Cigar never produced a yellow band Cohiba. The lawsuit by Cuba Tobacco was against the red dot Cohiba and Generals use of the name. Cuba Tobacco won the initial lawsuit but lost on appeal. There were other companies blatantly ripping off the entire packaging design and bands that were busted a couple of years ago and ordered to destroy all product and materials. I guess this hasn't completely deterred them or others from passing off these fauxhibas

Close - but no cigar. I'd suggest you do google for the REAL story - it's much better, albeit lengthy...

Let's just say - you'd be much better off firing up White Owl cigar (preferably grape) than that Dominican "Cohiba" you got - it is not now, nor has it ever been even close to either the Cuban or General Cigar Cohiba.

LOL hence why I said if I remember correctly. Thanks for correcting the info.

Make sure to save that Cohiba band when you smoke it... its pretty cool.

The Cohiba is not fake...it is a brand that has been made in the DR for years, they are putting dr right on the band for you...I have smoked plenty of these (I have a lot of Dominican friends who always bring me back cigars!) and they are pretty good. There are many factorys in the DR which are located outside of the free zone and cannot ship to us. Enjoy the smokes your friend bought back, some of these unknown brands are really very good!!!

There are 3 brands of COHIBA's that I know of, or 3 companies that make them

The COHIBA Republica Domenicana with the yellow band is made by Montecristi in the Domenican Republic. They went through a legal battle with General Cigars. Basically, General Cigars won the rights to the COHIBA name in the DR.

General Cigars' COHIBA's are generally known as the COHIBA RED DOTS and sold legally in the US.

Then you have the Cuban COHIBA's which everyone generally knows about and is made in Cuba.

IMO I would not say that the yellow band COHIBA's are fakes as they are made by a real cigar company which is Montecristi. However, I believe that the labels used by Montecristi actually use round white dots instead of the white squares. So, this cigar could be a fake Montecristi COHIBA cigar.

Here is some info I got from Neptune Cigars to try to back up my thoughts:

"The Cohiba cigar that is crafted today in the Dominican Republic took more than six years to develop. The dark, rich wrapper leaf is grown in the sub-tropical West African climate of Cameroon. The supple and flavorful Jember binder is grown in Indonesia. To balance the richness of the wrapper, the smooth-smoking Piloto Cubano filler leaves are grown in the Dominican Republic.

Cohiba is the Taino (native habitants of the Caribbean) word for “cigar”. Five centuries after Christopher Columbus heard the word Cohiba for the first time in the Dominican Republic, a Cohiba cigar was developed in the same country by Diaz y Cia in l978. The Dominican Cohiba cigar, which was reformulated in the 1990s, is the only Cohiba cigar that can be purchased legally in the United States.

The Cuban Cohiba, released in 1968, rapidly became one of the most sought-out cigars in the world, largely due to the relevance the Cuban government gave to this brand. For more than a decade, the cigar was reserved for gifts to diplomatic officials visiting the island. In the 1970s, General Cigars, who owned the mark in the United States, began marketing their Dominican made version in the American market. Another Cohiba cigar followed, also made in Dominican Republic, by the Montecristi factory.

After General Cigars won a legal battle against the distributors of Montecristi’s Cohiba, General Cigar’s Cohiba underwent a complete image makeover to further distinguish the brand from the yellow-and-black banded Cohibas. The new band consists of two thick black stripes on the top and bottom of the band. The remainder of the band is white, except for the name COHIBA in black, bold letters, with a red dot inside the “O” and the red oval with the words “HAND MADE” in small black letters. Thus, the brand with the new look became known as “Cohiba Red Dot”.

The Cohiba Red Dot cigars are not made with Cuban-grown tobaccos and have never been associated to the Cohiba cigars sold outside the United States. Cubatabaco, the state-run company that owns Cuba's cigar trademarks, sued General Cigar in 1997 over the Cohiba mark, but General Cigars won the lawsuit at the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in New York City in 2005.
