If you are considering cultural change, lyrical excellence, studio advances and enduring popularity it is hard to not say the Beatles in the rock era. After 40 years the Stones have to be doing something right too and would have to be second.

I guess when you say "best band" you have to consider longevity and original members as well as the music produced. Therefore credit must be given to the Stones who (correct me if I am wrong) still have all the original members. As well as Aerosmith I think. But the loss of a member constituting the band not being able to proceed to me is a stronger testament. I am a huge fan of Floyd but my top 3 have to be:

3. Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band
2. Nirvana
3. Led Zepplin (R.I.P. John Bonham)
