Anyone ever done football squares? Well, here's your chance! I'm posting this early because there are time deadlines on entering! See below! :)

I have decided to run a Football Squares Pool for the Superbowl. It will work like this:

We will start with a blank 10x10 grid. Each person may choose squares that they wish to 'own' for the game. For each square you own, you will be required to mail TWO cigars to one of the winners. There will be four winners based on the scoring of the game (more info below).

After all of the squares are chosen, the numbers 0 through 9 will be randomly selected and placed at the heading of each column and each row on the grid. The top of the grid (columns) will represent the AFC team, and the rows will represent the NFC team.

Winners are chosen based on the LAST number in each team's score at the end of the quarter. For example, if at the end of quarter 1, the AFC team has 21 points, and the NFC team has 7, the winning square is the square that corresponds to the column #7 and row #1 on the board based on the random drawing done before the game. This will be repeated for each quarter. It is always COLUMN first (AFC team) then ROW (NFC team) - this board does not pay forward and backward.

The final board will be sent to each participant in the form of an excel spreadsheet. It will be divided into four quadrants. This will allow you to know who you send cigars to. It will work like this:

If I 'own' three squares, and two of them are in quadrant 1 and the last one is in quadrant 3, then I will mail FOUR cigars (two per square) to the winner of the first quarter, and TWO cigars to the winner of the third quarter. You must mail TWO cigars per square that you 'own' to the winner of each quarter where your squares appare on the board. Don't worry too much, your squares will be color-coded on the excel spreadsheet to make it easy to understand. We're doing it this way so that no single person has to collect and distribute all of the sticks. If you WIN a quarter AND you have sqaures in your own quadrant, then you KEEP your sticks, you simply have no reason to mail them out, unless you really want to spend money on mailing something to yourself. ;)

Remember:

- You MUST mail two cigars per square that you commit to, unless you won the quarter where your squares live.
- The deadline for committing to your squares is January 15. If all squares are not committed by January 15, then players wishing to pick up more squares may do so between the 15 and the 25th of January. Any other squares NOT chosen, I will take responsibility for.
- Please have your cigars ready to go out on February 2nd! The game is February 1st, and this is plenty of notice!
- Each person may choose UP TO 5 squares to begin with. Any squares not claimed by Jan. 15 are open for players with 5 squares to pick up extras.

If you have any questions, please respond to this thread. The board is posted here: http://www.cigarstores.net/sbowlcp.xls. Please take a look at it and choose your squares. Colored squares are still available. The first person in each post here according to board time will be allowed to take a square. If I have not updated that board and someone before you chose the square you wanted, you will have to choose another. Please look at the board and the posts here before choosing your squares. I will post each time I have updated the board.

Remember - the score numbers are random. You will not know which scores you have until the day that all squares are chosen. I will pick my squares after several of you have picked yours. CoventryCat86 will be helping me choose the numbers, so that you can be assured I'm not choosing to my benefit. ;)

Good luck!

I've done these pools before and I have to say I've never heard of the quadrant thing. As far as I know, it is a 10 x 10 grid and whatever square you get is for the whole game.

What's this about a quadrant and it changing?????????

he's doing that to ensure each winner gets the same number of cigars. usually this is done with money and someone has the $$ in hand and can just hand it out to the winner(s). the problem here comes with everyone being located all over the country (or world).

think of it this way...

if you numbers (score) comes up as the winner, you win. but when that number comes up (ie. quarter 1,2,3,4) is what determines who actually sends you cigars.

make sense?

There is a winner for Every quarter, not just the whole game.

The board is divided in four:

1 2
3 4

with 25 squares in each quad. That means 50 cigars. The owners of those squares mail cigars to the person whose squares match for that quarter.

For example:

At the end of the first quarter, the score is 14 (AFC team) to 7 (NFC team). The winner for that quarter is whoever has the square corresponding to 4,7 on the board. They get cigars mailed from everyone in quadrant 1 (which is the top 25 squares of the board, if you look at my quadrant layout). Then if the second quarter is 14 to 14, the winner is 4,4 and everyone in quad 2 sends that person cigars, etc.

Normally (when playing with money), one person would collect $2 per square, and pay each quarter's winner $50. That doesn't work as well with cigars and shipping costs, so we split the board to make sure that each quarter's winner gets 25 squares worth (50 cigars) of cigars mailed to them. 'Paying' each quarter also means that we have 4 small winners instead of one huge one. :)

Give me #34 and #78

Thanks :p

BTW: you gonna specify a Quality Minimum on these sticks?

Whoopsie. I put him down for 74, not 34 ... ALostTexan, you'll have to choose something other than 34 (and I need to learn to read!!)

Got you down, MMM ... you sure you want just one? We've got 100 squares to fill! :)

First choices:

35, 86, 87, 61, 72

(Senate district #35 in CT, my two cigar pool numbers (86 & 87), the year I was born (61) and the year of my Cadillac Limousine (72)

And if any of those are taken:

54, 79, 53, 63, 66, 32

I dunno why (54), year I graduated High school (79), again I have no idea (53), year of a chevy convertible i had when i was in college (63), my brother's license plate number on his truck (66, YES only two digits, cool, huh?), the license plate on our other truck (32, ANOTHER two digit plate, I forgot to mention another hobby I have is ALPCA)

Hell, I am the one that needs to learn to read. I will take #99, and for good measure I will take #06, #50, and #71. That'll give me 5, which is more than enough.

ALostTexan

if i understand this right this is completely random, so i will choose 1-4 and #20

thanks
jc

Sounded a little confusing at first. Then I read the payout again. Sweet.

Give me 81, 90, 91, 100.

12, 76, 82, 94
Just to make sure I got the rules right: I can only loose 8 sticks by playing these 4 #'s
