Getting Used to Whiskey

There's drinking in college? :0 Damn, what else did I miss as a commuter. I thought it was called ZooMass because of the excellent animal husbandry program.

bigvinny- I'll do a packi run for you. You just have to drive 3,000 miles to pick up the stuff at my house.

Make sure you pick up the good stuff; Natty Ice! :p

You could save $2 by going with a 30 rack of Genny Cream Ale instead. LMK.

Never had it... Is it better than the piss that Natty is? We're looking for drunk/dollar ratio here!

Never had more than a few sips of either. For drunk/dollar ratio, may I reccomend a Fifth of Bacardi 151? Unless dry heaves are part of that equation.

Edit to add use of obvious sarcasm

I think college kids should be able to drink, I didn't start until I got to college, and even now im relatively responsible with it... but nowadays its getting ridiculous how young kids start.. i didnt drink in high school but alot of my friends did... I don't agree with it. One of my coworkers told me she started drinking at 12. Then again shes a raging alcoholic but.... correlation maybe? I know that when I have kids I'll keep a watchful eye over them.

First let's get some terminology straight. WHISKEY is everything but Scotch. It has an "E" before the "Y". Whisky without the "E" is scotch. You might see something that is not scotch with the "whisky" spelling but they are trying to obfuscate what they really are.

Normally, one does not start with Islay whisky if you haven't been a scotch drinker before. It usually takes people a while to get used to the smokey peaty flavors of Islay scotch. However, YMMV. I like to recommend Tamdhu as a good starter but Aberlour, Cragganmore and Balvenie DoubleWood are good for beginners too.

For American whiskey or bourbon (they are not the same) I like almost anything by Van Winkle and Elijha Craig. I've done some reviews on bourbon and rye you might find helpful if you care to read them.

It is "better" that natty Ice, IMHO. It is, of course, cheap piss in a beer can...just b"better" cheap piss. I had a family friend who was 102 years old, drank a half a can of Genny Cream a day, and it used to rock her world. She weighed about 80 poudns dripping wet holding a brick, and was the feistiest old lady I ever knew. Found out that her husband had a pension after he had been dead for 30 years...she didn't know it, but she was a multi-millionaire. Still didn't want anything else to drink besides her Cream Ale. Escorting her across the country (first class) for a wedding, we brought her Genny Cream so she could have one on the plane.
For memories of Irene alone...Genny holds a dear spot in my heart...
Oh, and Natty ice really, really is piss.

That is a question that can't be answered in a blanket statement. Some bourbon is smooth and some isn't. Some scotch is smooth and some isn't. And just to confuse things, sometimes scotch isn't smooth on pourpose but is still good.

Is bourbon less harsh than scotch? or is it just a different taste?

I think the question you need to be asking is not if bourbon is better than scotch, but if either are better than Natty Ice. And I think a consensus on that would be pretty easy to find...

True dat!

Where could I find said drinks.... not at the supermarket i think... can most of these higher shelf drinks be found at the corner liquor store? Or can most of them be found online... I'm interested in getting some balvini doublewood

Any decent liquor store should have or be able to get Balvenie DoubleWood.

I was once in your same place, bud, and I wish someone had told me how to get used to the burn. Had to figure it out on my own.

The best way is to take small sips, really take the time to appreciate the flavors before you swallow, and the best thing that'll help you is to sip your whisk(e)y with a glass of good ice water on the side. That way, if the burn starts to get uncomfortable, you can just quench it with a little water.

Do that for awhile and in no time you'll be loving all the good whisk(e)ys, rums, gins, and other spirits out there.

I started understanding flavors, tastes, sinus, and pallette related stuff on wine tours.I have always been into wine and coffee and tried to learn how tasteings are done and how they find such intricate flavors. On my quest,I found craft beers and again liked beer again.
I started on the low abv and lighter beers and worked my way up to barleywines, scotch ales and porters and what not.I then went to gins and vodkas. Then on a hunch and a craveing I tried some decent 12yr old scotch and loved it but found it burned my stomache too much which is probably ulceris.
What I did in the beginning was on the rocks with water then went on the rocks only but lowered the ice amount after some time to alleviate the watered down taste. In the winter I do it with no ice and a splash of water.
I am working on bourbans and american whiskey but usually only in the winter. Its alot harsher but with all spirits I can indeed pick out flavors and pair with a good cigar.

Try Glenfiddich 12yr old, very smooth and fruity for about $35 a bottle here.
Or maybe on the cheaper side and usually on sale everywhere today Dewers 12 yr old,the gold round container.also smooth and fruity.

The wife loves scotch but still waters it down too much but she has worked out kinks in her drinking habits,it just took some time.

I agree with ABV,stay away from islay or other peaty scotches for now.

Just too mention I do cognacs and brandy too but find them too sweet to enjoy for an entire night.

As mentioned above previously, take your time, sip, and like a good cigar try to slow it down to almost a meditational experiance and try to pick out flavors and things you notice.Doing so will cause relaxation and this is where the "I need a cigar or a scotch to relax" comes from.

Enjoy!
