IPad - WTF?

....The scary part is that Apple will control everything. Since they built the platform they decide what programs and website will be compatible. You will only be able to surf the web on Safari. It won't run flash based videos. That means you'll have to buy an episode from iTunes instead of watching it free on Hulu. Once you buy a song, book, episode, or movie, you will only be able to watch it on Apple products. That means no switching when the shinier and faster model comes out.....
Glad you love your Mac, but you just pointed out one of the big reasons I'll never own one.

There are going to be so many other tablets that are going to be much better, the only people why will by the iPad are die hard mac fanboys. I really think that if a person did some research they would realize that the iPad is really nothing more than a large iTouch.

Not sure that's necessarily a bad thing....

In any case, I'm getting one because I'd like an ebook reader and was never very impressed with the ones that came before and turning my laptop on it's side to read ebooks gets kind of uncomfortable.

On your Mac computer you can install and run whatever you want. You're limited by buying their hardware, I guess, but that's about it. You can always upgrade the basics on your own, too.

What he said is certainly true for the iWhatever, though.

The wife's machine and mine just went through major upgrade cycles and we're both happy Windows 7 users. She's got a Core2 running W7-32 bit and I have a Quad Core with 8GB of ram running W7-64 bit. A stable, easy to drive, wonderful operating system. I build my own hardware up from the best components in the industry. That way, I know what's in them, and we enjoy very stable, very fast and powerful performance with our fully networked machines. Of course, doing what I do for a living, I think it's fair to say I have better than average knowledge of the PC environment and know how to test and verify the platforms, once built. That's the mistake many PC builders don't go through - they don't do a complete verification of the many subsystems of the platform. I can't tell you how many systems hit my bench, both store bought and home assembled, that can't pass basic memory stability tests. It really does take the right combination of parts and sometimes a little BIOS tweeking to make things work right. I rather enjoy it, though lately the hardware is pretty darn good if you stick with the "good stuff".

Not to throw gas on the Mac / WinTel fire, but all the games and tools I run are Windows based....which is where we're staying.....

Best I can tell, this thing is just an Apple version of the Amazon Kindle.

I bought my very first Apple laptop last March, after losing a PC to a virus. I like my Mac.

I also see where the Iphone was a game changer, and Apple's faithful may make this a hit, but not sure why. I mean, no USB port just tells me that this is a $500 appliance for buying more stuff from Apple.

I think Apple should have just added touch features to the Mac.

<--- another apple hater

I'll jump on the anti-apple bandwagon.

I don't get the ipad either. Tablets didn't quite catch on, but it does less than what previous gen tablets did, has a nice screen, but costs more.

And is the fancy screen really that much more important for use as an ebook reader? I just see the fancy screen being bit overkill compared to the kindle.

And the final straw is the apple control that's built into every one of their devices. They make it easy to use if you're using their custom software. But the price paid is that you are limited to their software and it always costs much more than the alternatives. Which is why I could never see the apple fanboy point of view. I like open-source.

I think in order to "get it" you need to accept this is an Internet appliance and not a computer. The people complaining about this seem to want a computer. If that's the case, go get one and forget about the iPad. You're not in the market for this thing anyway, imo.

I'm far from a fanboy or a hater, I just realize these (iPod, iPhone, iPad) are appliances that do a good job in the realm they're limited to. The "apple lock-in" doesn't affect as there are applications or methods to cover all of my needs. If I come across something that isn't covered, I go to my computer.

I like open-source.
Again, get a Mac computer with a BSD-based operating system and you can install all of the open source you want. It's only the appliances that are locked down.

Smoke what you like! :D

I love my iMac. It's my second one, and now that there's that sweet 27-incher on the market, will be replaced soon by my third.

However, I have yet to get an iPod, simply because I'm not from a generation used to carrying music around with me to listen to all the freakin' time. If I'm at home, I can put a CD in the stereo or stream some internet radio. If I'm in my truck, I can put a CD in the player or turn on the radio. If I'm out walking, or working, or at the gym, it honestly never occurs to me that "gee, this'd be so much better if I had earbuds in and ______ playing."

*shrug*

I'll probably get one eventually, just so I can transport a playlist to the patio or the truck or the bedroom. But it's not a priority.

Don't have an iPhone either, because I never use the phone I do have anyway, and in general, hate telephones. I only carry one around with me because my mother's getting on in years and there might be an emergency sometime. However, I will say that's one slick piece of tech. Sweet . . . if you like phones.

The iPad intrigues me, though, because I like the internet. I don't even have cable television anymore . . . I can watch the shows I like online, and like discussion forums, follow various blogs, interact with favorite artists on dA, surf a lil' porn now and then . . .

So a simple, trim appliance that I could toss in a briefcase or overnight bag to carry the internet around with me does have a certain appeal. Okay, a HUGE appeal. But I'm going to wait for the next gen, or at least see what kind of apps and plugins and unlocks come out for it over the next year.

I'm sticking with my MacBook. Getting a 27" iMac down the road too. Recently switched from PC to Mac simply because of the constant hicups associated with Windows. A PC/Computer is only as good as it's operating system. Having become disgusted with Microsoft, I took the plunge with an Apple, and couldn't be happier. PC's used to be a hobby, however recently I've become bored with constantly upgrading, fixing, tweaking my PC, and decided to try Apple. Does everything I need without the headache.

Definitely not a fanboy/hater. Both systems have their place in the computing world, just have to use what works best for your needs.

Like BBS said, use what you like and like what you use. :)

I love my MacBookPro 2.4 Core 2 Duo running OSX 10.6.3 and my iPhone 3GS. I have been Mac since 1998, and haven't looked back.

Different strokes for different folks is right! ;)

edit: specs

I won't be buying one just because I don't need it. I love my ibook and was very happy with my dell xps until it imploded. Being very comfortable in Win/Mac/*nix I would say I like different machines for different purposes. Agree with Tom though, use what you like and like what you use.... don't let hype or anti-hype make your decisions for you.

With my recent upgrade to Windows 7 (64 bit) I can almost forgive Microsoft for their previous OS's. While you Maclodytes wait on the 27" screen my wife has been using a 28" for over a year now. She got the big computer screen and I had to make do with a 32" LCD in the study. Fair trade so far.

It's hard to see how so many people can judge "it's just a...." when they've never actually seen one. Probably less than 20% of people that bought one did not have a laptop and were choosing this over a netbook.

It's nothing like an iPod touch, not even in the same realm whatsoever. The app's that were released in the first day are beyond anything offered before, it's simply an amazing device to use.

I ended up picking one up for work because we have to evaluate the new platform for some software we're making, there were no real lines at the Apple store.

I'd advise anyone to check it out at the store, although after using it I would have to say that I'd never buy one without the 3G (which BTW means no GPS either!). The device is basically useless for anything other than the couch/starbucks with no 3G and the fact that all GPS app's are dysfunctional.... well that's icing on the cake.

Problem is that the thing is barely logical at a price point of 500 bucks, so throwing in the more expensive model makes it pretty difficult to pick one up.

But, one thing I can say is that it's a world apart from an iPhone or iPod Touch.

So what you're saying is those of us that did our homework, read all the reviews, and did our due diligence online can't fairly judge this because we didn't drop $500 on one, even though you've pretty much confirmed what most of us were saying?
