First off, let me be clear that I am not defending the use of steroids or Clemens character (or lack of). I do personally believe the trainer (stooge) is a real dirtbag and knows more than he’s telling and less about what he is saying is true.
That being said, my family and I have been in and around semi-pro & professional sports for years, and know many athletes that have used steroids, HGH, B-12, GHB, etc, and many who have not. Professional sports, baseball, football, hockey, and basketball in particular demand a high performance level from the top athletes. Keeping one’s body at peak performance after the pounding of physical contact and enduring harsh playing conditions takes a toll on ANYONE’s body. If the latest technology was not used, then these bodies would wear out pretty quick, and the demands of the sport/business don’t allow that. We are kidding ourselves if we think these athletes don’t use something, not regularly used by the public, to enhance their ability to recover, perform, and maintain the size needed to play at that elite level. IMO it seems hypocritical for Congress to parade these players in front of the media while ads for Viagra & Cialis fill the commercial breaks. Don’t forget, some of the ballplayers of the 30’s & 40’s were amphetamine freaks, and the 70’s brought us Vicadin, Demerol, & Darvocet. What the H-E- double hockey sticks is Congress doing investigating this – sound like a bunch of jock sniffers doing what Congress does best – NOTHING. Protecting kids?; BS, try face time for reelection.
Let’s not leave out the trainers, some are not the innocent lackey of the athlete, but rather a pusher for the organization, and told to do what they need to do to allow the star athlete to perform, often issuing ultimatums to the player. Remember these guys are not a Doctor and don’t take the Hippocratic Oath. If their athlete makes it big, they go along for the ride like this guy, but when the gravy train ends they revert to the rat bastids they are. This is not an excuse or argument, just a perspective.
