For the longest time I used the $0.99 cigar cutters, guillotine style. But, to be honest they've only last a couple of cuts before the went dull. In addition they weren't getting very good cuts anyways. Now I've been using the double bladed guillotine to cut my cigars for about a couple of months. This one was about 10 bucks. I'm wondering, is there a way to sharpen a nicer cutter to keep it working for a long time? Do the $50 cutters last long enough? Please enlighten me. I'm considering moving to the punch style cutters.

I love my Xikar multi-tool. I've only had it about 6 months, but it's got a lifetime warranty (and Xikar has the best warranty in the business). Smooth cuts, nice little gadgets, VERY sturdy design, and I got mine for like $25. They retail for $40, but I saw them a few places at $30.

Edit:
On the sharpening, there's no good way to sharpen them yourself, but Xikar will sharpen it, or give you a new one, for free.

I'm to the point now where I use the 'score and lift' technique so any blade will work. Regular old box cutter type blades work just great. Cheap and effective.

I have two Palio cutters, cost around $40.00 shipped. Each time you close it, it self sharpens. I have cut hundreds with my first one and recently picked up another to keep in the car. I've had others including two Xikars that are good, I just like the Palio's better. PS. Some where recently I saw Palio's around $35.00 free shipping, I will see if I can locate it again and edit this post if I find it.

It was Little Havana Cigars, $35.99 free shipping, however, currently "out of stock"

I have an Xikar that works well for me, but the "score and lift" method (thanks Wilkey) that rectifythis links to in his post is my preferred method now. For torps I use the "off with it's head " method. :)

I have a Palio, Xicar, and a Wenger SAK. The SAK is the best of the three, and it'll open your beer, wine and C-Rats. What more could you ask for.

I prefer my Palio over my Davidoff Zino.

I've got a Xikar and like most quality cutters, if has a lifetime warranty. If it gets dull, you can send it in and get the blades re-honed. Not that you'll ever need to....

Short answer - a quality cutter is worth it, lasts forever if cared for, and will only add to your smoking enjoyment.....

I have several cutters, a new Xikar still in it's box. However, for me, the Palio is #1.
Honestly though, a finger nail scored in the right place will remove the cap just as well :D

Two Palios here but when I forget them I use my pocket knife to score and lift.

I was in the same boat with the cheap cutters for several years. I tried a few Xikars, but found them a little awkward to cut with since I was used to the guillotine style. So I went with a Palio. Good decision. It's only been a few months, but it still cuts like it was made yesterday!

Also, I have always been one to set my cigar on my cutter when there isn't an ashtray around, the Palio's design helps in this as well. Now it takes a much stronger gust to blow my cigar across the table!

Do they all self-sharpen? I was looking on the web site and did not find anything about this feature. I may have missed it. I will be looking to get a new cutter (or 2), ashtray, and a new lighter (my Blue Rhino is falling apart) when I get home as a gift to myself.

I'm not sure of the Palio self sharpening... but mine cuts just as good as day one. I've never tried the SAK, but I personally prefer the Palio over the Xikar. In any case, all three have big fans around here. I would guess that most all CP'rs that own one of the three feel it's a good investment.

There's no such thing as a self-sharpening cigar cutter. It requires abrasives like silicon carbide, aluminum oxide or diamonds to sharpen steel. Simply rubbing two blades together will sharpen nothing.

Get a Palio.

You will not be sorry if you buy one of these cutters. They are the best on the market as far as I am concerned.

hello coinguy,

i prefer a punch cutter and have a xikar xi007. it punches a clean 7mm hole every time. it obviously won't work for a torpedo/pyramid/etc.

as i am fond of churchills, someone (will have to look this up) recommended a larger cutter. thus, i ordered a xikar xi008 punch cutter. it is a 2-piece design and will punch a 10mm hole. i will try it out next weekend as it will be delivered this week.

hope this helps.

thanks,
mike
