Major Announcement - Cigar Community as a whole

Ho man...I was reading the first part and was thinking this was a farewell as CP was sold. WHEW!! Man I'm glad it was a happy ending! :D It really shows that CP IS the place to be! Thank you Rod!!

X10000000000!!!

Thanks for all you do Rod, you're a damn fine example of how to walk the walk!

That's an upstanding maneuver on your part, Rod. Placing people and principles in front of the almighty dollar is a rare occurrence, and it's damned nice to see.

Now - everybody here is thankful for what Rod has done, but the fact remains that he turned down a sizable chunk of change to keep CP intact. I'd like to suggest perhaps a brainstorming thread of ways Rod can generate more revenue from this site - if other members agree it to be appropriate, and of course with Rod's blessing. Maybe we can come up with some ideas that maintain the integrity of the site, but make Rod's decision work out even better for him financially than the offer he received. Now THAT would be cool.
Support the CP store as much as you can, that will help him more than you think.

Business is business, and love is bullshit. Its hard to call it this before you decided, but now that you have, you took the high road. You're a good friend and Brother.

Your such a Republican, but I love you anyway.

Doc.

Thank you Rod for keeping it pure and real. This site is my only home on-line, I have tried to get involved in other sites but I find myself coming back here because the others don't measure up to what you and the other brothers and sisters here have built. Keep up the good work and if you want a new house just ask, i'll do all the plmbing and heating for you. :D

Thanks Rod. You truly are the right man to lead this community. Yeah, there's money in cigars; but as we all know, our hobby is more than that. We meet, we hang out, we smoke, we discuss everything, we bond... It's a piece of our culture. Your decision makes this community the strongest and most special cigar community in all of the world.

We're behind you on this, Rod.

Thanks again.

Wow Rod it is amazing how much of a stand up guy you are. Thank you for everything that you do.

Kristin

Thanks, Rod.

You know how much this place means to a lot of us and we have a pretty good idea of what CP means to you. I'd hate to see that sullied with the wholesale change that would come from new ownership.

:)

Thumbs up to a stand up guy!!!!!

Rod, you steer the ship and we'll repel all boarders. Whatever you decide to do you know that we're with you.

Even though I haven't been here that long, I truly enjoy CP, and couldn't imagine myself on another forum ... AT ALL. I have had the pleasure of meeting some of the greatest, most kindest, and informative people in the universe here and I wouldn't want it any other way. Thank you for not selling us out, and giving us the opportunity to combine as one brotherhood ... we ARE the original BOTL.

Much Respect,

Nick

Dear Members,

Things are changing in the online cigar community, and I feel it’s necessary that I fill you in on what’s going on, and our stance on this recent development.

You may have noticed that five cigar forums were recently sold to a gentleman named Jon Caputo.

Jon purchased:
Club Stogie
Top 25 Cigar
Cigar Live
Cigar Review
Cigar Smokers

...about a week or so ago. This is quite an acquisition…

Jon approached me about a year ago and wanted to purchase CigarPass. I declined… A couple months ago he approached me again wanting to purchase CigarPass. Without going into too much detail on the offer, I will say it was enough money for a good down payment on a house (in California) plus money left over for a new car. His offer also included keeping me on board as a paid consultant. I doubt the offers he proposed to some of the other sites were as generous (surely it depends on the reputation, size, etc of the site he’s eyeing).

I started CigarPass in 2000; I have always had a very strong passion for cigars, which is why I decided to start CP long ago. CP has become one of the largest, most trafficked and most respected cigar communities around. I never had any intention of trying to make a quick buck with CP; I have made many very good friends because of CigarPass. That in itself is priceless, and I don’t want anything to change.

I don’t know Mr. Caputo other than the correspondence I have had with him over the past year, however he says that he is passionate about cigars, and wants to take the forums that he recently purchased to the next level. I will say that if Jon paid anywhere near what he offered me for CigarPass, he has a major investment in those five forums. Business is business, and it appears that his goal is to make money from those forums; most likely with advertising revenue, content purchased, etc.

We’ll have to wait and see how this transpires...should be quite interesting. My only thought is, if he is so passionate about cigars, why was he never been a member of any of the forums in the past? It’s about turning his purchases into revenue making entities. It seems people on the other forums have a lot of questions that are not being answered. As a member of a community, they’re entitled to answers. After all, it’s the members who make the community… When you think about it, one owner of multiple forums would most likely treat those forums as one, bundling them all together in a sense. If you get banned from one forum, do you get banned from the others as well? Are the rules now the same for all forums? Members of those communities have a lot of good questions – we’ll just have to wait and see how this plays out.

I did some research on Jon and his previous acquisitions, and I came across some unhappy people who had wished they never sold out. I’ve been participating in online communities for the past 15 years, and it’s rare that an acquisition of a community goes smooth. This acquisition is major, involving five cigar sites…

My loyalties have and always will be to this community and its members. CP is the largest privately owned cigar community around, and things aren’t about to change for us, you have my word. I have declined all offers, and will continue to do so. Passion is a strong word, and I think I’ve proven how passionate I really am about this community, and how much it means to me.

That’s all I know right now, we’ll have to wait and see how things transpire.

I wish the other forums a lot of success, however buy-outs rarely ever go smoothly for the members.

I will post more information as it becomes available.

Yours Truly,
Rod
CigarPass - The ONE and ONLY

Edited to add Top 25 Cigars as one of the acquired sites.

Do you think Jon would pay me to add "color" to his new forums? I mean actual cash, not swag. I'd consider a career change for the right price. Nothing against anyone here... well, other than a couple of you that can't seem to stop fuggin' typing till a week after you've made your point... and a couple of you that type for a fuggin' week before you get to your point... and a few of you that couldn't make a point on a bet... and the picture posters in lieu of words... and the popcorn guys... and the chatroom whiners...

I knew about 2 of them, CigarLive made a post and so did Cigar Smokers. It is sad that they sold them. I really wonder about the future. I know people have a lot of questions on Cigar Live and they are not getting many answers.
Well heck, the announcement wasn't obvious then because I missed it at both sites. Got linkie?

Those communities are so different. And throw ClubStogie into the mix and you've a bunch of disparate entities with different cultures. I cannot imagine how they will integrate, if that's the intent.

Wilkey

PS. Nevermind. I found 'em. All I can say is I thank God you didn't sell, Rod. I don't know why but I got a really uneasy feeling reading those announcements. Rod, as of this day, you stand alone in the cigar world.

First of all, bravo, Rod! Not easy to turn down that kind of green.

In any event, Jon Caputo also owns http://www.developershed.com/ -- which is sort of an umbrella entity that brings together a number of related acquired web sites. I'd imagine his intention is to repeat that formula with cigars... not necessarily merge all of these sites together, but coalesce them into an umbrella entity.

It's a damn good thing when you stick with what you believe in, follow your gut, and do something because you love it. I haven't been here long, but your dedication to this site speaks volumes.
Thanks,
Mike

It's tough to add much beyond what has been written here already.

I guess I've been fortunate. CP is one of the first forum sites I ever visited and the only one I've much participated in. Honestly, I can't figure out how people find time to absorb and participate in multiple chat and forum sites. I barely have time to keep up with this one. But, all that to say this, I'm glad I landed here. Obviously, I was very lucky and for that I'm grateful. (thank you preembargo)

We have a saying at work... "There ain't no friend as true as a buck or two". Evidently, Rod feels differently and I'm thankful for that.

We also have another saying... "Everything is negotiable". Rod, as much as I appreciate your honesty, and dedication to CP, I sincerely hope that if the right deal did come along, you would do the right thing for you and that lovely lady you obviously don't pay enough attention to. :p

Thanks for everything Rod.
