While I was watching the Inauguration today, I noticed some disturbing actions by my fellow Americans. The first thing that bothered me was the booing of Pres. Bush, both Sr. and Jr. The people booing them were my parents age, late 50's / early 60's. The actions of these parents trouble me in that this is what their kids are seeing and the morals/behaviors that are being passed on to them. While I did not vote for Pres. Bush Jr's second term, I will respect the mad for what he wanted to do, and the responsibilities which he voluntarily accepted. When Pres. Bush Jr walked down the steps to his seat at the Capital Building, I clapped for him, as I did all presidents before him. A lady at the table next to me, said "Are you serious!?!?” I said "Yes, I can be respectful." Her response was "Well you don’t know what he did then, do you!” I was shocked at that display of rudeness and intolerance. This is not what I expect from my parent's generation, but its actions like this which explain why I see people of similar age to me, being disrespectful, rude and self-centered. Lastly, when Former Pres Bush Jr. boarded Executive One to fly off to Andrews AFB, the room erupted in applause, cheers, and song. While Former Pres. Bush Jr did not enjoy a high level of public support, the amount of disrespect, contempt and open scorn to Bush Jr disappoints me greatly. The same people who preach openness and progressiveness for our society happened to be the same folks who showed intolerance and scorn of an elected official. The lady who confronted me when I clapped for then Pres. Bush Jr showed a level of intolerance that bothers me greatly. We as a people need to show more respect to people in general, but certainly ones who take on such large responsibility. While you may dislike the person, keep those comments to your self. Do not accost people who differ in opinions. I feel that the values which this country was founded upon are being dismissed by both the government and its people.

I’ll get off of my soap box here.

Half of all people are of below average intelligence.

Most people are shits. The ability to freely be a shit is part of what makes this country great.

Don't let it bother you.

I'm going outside to smoke a CAO America Monument.

Overall, it was a tremendous inauguration. It looked like a sea of millions of people waving little tiny flags, quite a sight.

I really was. I feel really fortunate to have been part of this event.

The one thing that makes me shake my head is that most of these people thought a lot differently right after 911. How quickly people can be swayed but im sure the media has nothing to do with it.

I was very impressed with President Obama's speech. He was blunt about how this generation needs to look at how past generations were able to lift themselves up from hard times. I was especially impressed with the way he reached out not only to Europe but to the Arab nations in a show of friendship but at the same time made it clear we would crush those that seek to harm us.

Overall what i wanted to hear from him.

i feel you cabaiguan. without getting political, i don't like bush, didn't vote, and am personally glad to usher in a new era, however as much as i don't want to believe it, i have to believe that the man did what he could given the circumstances which he was burdened with. i didn't vote for obama or anyone else for that matter, but i damn well hope he does a good job. this country needs it, and i'm pulling for him all the way.

I’ll get off of my soap box here.

You must remember.....openness and progressiveness as long as it's toward things they want ;)

What happened to the 'no politics' rule?

Isn't there enough coverage of this event EVERYWHERE else?

This is the first Inauguration I can remember, so for me, it was something I'll remember for a long time. I agree w/ you CJ...no need to disrespect Bush like that...especially after he's given this country 8 years of service. While I don't like him...booing him is wrong.

As for Obama's speech, I expected nothing less from him. I really liked how he stressed that change wont come over night, that it'll be long and difficult process. I think many of my peers (young people - college students esp) believe that we'll wake up tomorrow and the country's problems will be gone....Kudos to him for that.

Hopefully this country can pick itself up, and SOON! :)

People's attitude toward Bush kinda irks me too. I didn't vote for him but he was still our President. I didn't vote for Obama but he's still the man that got the job. What ever happened to respect?

Oftern people do not realize that one of the key reason that the United States has enjoyed the economic success it has it based upon the view that it is one, if not the, most stable governments that allows a sense of constance for economic investment.

This stability is premised upon mutual respect and civility. Persons stand when the judge enters the courtroom not out of respect for the person, but respect for the position. Civility requires that a mature and informed populace must be able to distinguish between the due regard for the role even though the person in that role may not have been one's choice or that one disagrees vehemently with that person.

Hence, I will always applaud the President of the United States regardless of my view of the person who holds the title.

What did I think about it? It was boring and insulting on many levels including the disrespect shown towards the Bush famalies mentioned above. While people say this election had nothing to do with race...that this country is past that, I sure heard alot of racist comments and sentiments throughout the entire ceremony. As for the speach? Well...lets just say it was a massive letdown compared to all the hoopla being made about it being "chiseled in marble" and reminiscent of Lincoln.

As for the disbelief of those in their 50's and 60's acting the way they did. You must remember that their age sets them clearly at their youth in the height of the bra burning and anti american rallys that ran rampant in the 1960's. And the cycle continues as they raise their kids with the same directive.

No soap box, you are totally right and just stating the obvious....not many people do these days. This is a Nation full of self righteous hypocrites. Watch how supportive that same lady will be when her favorite candidate stumbles, she'll give him a pass within a blink of an eye.

Every time you witness something like this, your faith in Humanity takes a serious blow....I know how you feel.

80/20 Steve....only 20% of this Country really gets it. The 80% can be lead to an opinion by watching a single TV commercial....about anything!

I did not post anything political, it was an observation on how people act with intolerance and disrespect.

And I didn't quote your post in my reply as it wasn't a direct response to what you wrote.

Regardless, these types of posts turn quickly. People can't help but get political in stuff like this and it's usually best to avoid the topics altogether.

That is, of course, just my opinion on the matter.

Americans showing poor sportsmanship? Well, I just don't believe it.

Does anyone here actually believe a topic like this can be started without people getting "political" about it?

Especially these one month wonders who haven't taken the time to read the rules (hint hint BL) who will go ahead and include their little dig given the chance.

I see this thread crashing and burning.

The observation is on point and a disgrace to boo someone in that situation. People have lost all civility in their manner and that is what is wrong. There is a time and place for everything and that was the wrong place and time.

Now to cigar content. I wonder what cigar 43 will smoke and if 44's wife will let him smoke a cigar tonight in his new home?
