My cooler is much smaller than yours and my cooler sits like a chest; I leave the boxes closed. I think of it as compartmentalized humidity control. Even if I take all of the boxes out, inside the box will not vary too much

I don't have enough experience with 5Vegas to know if what you descibe is characteristic of them (I've had one very old corona, which was great). But what you describe also sounds a lot like a very dry cigar. How long did it take to smoke?
