Thanks for the post. I was very excited when I saw the pics, but worried when I realized that the guy making the offer wasn't a pipe smoker... for precisely this kind of reason. From a photo you can't tell a bit of rim tar from some serious rim char! Tar you can deal with, char is forever...
Stanwell pipes are in general great smokers. Frenchy sells estate Stanwell pipes at $38 usually, so $50 for a new one is a great deal. If you like the shape and size, and it's in great condition, I'd go for it!
It is a really cool offer, but I'll have to pass as well. I've been buying too many pipes lately. I'd be a lot more comfortable if an experienced pipe smoker was going to the sale, as well.
Hope everyone gets excellent buys!
Most carvers and factories make a wide range of sizes and shapes. As an example, I have two Tim West pipes that are less than 5" long, and might hold 1.5 grams of tobacco. A guy I know is selling a Tim West pipe that's over 7" long and holds probably 3 times as much tobacco. From a...
Did you get the stem to loosen up?
Another option is to stuff the bowl with cotton and carefully add alcohol to it to saturate the balls. (Don't get it on the outside!) Stash the pipe overnight. The alcohol will not only sanitize the bowl, it should remove some of the tar from the inside of...
I generally prefer estate pipes anyway, but particularly, with Dunhill, I think new Dunhills aren't a good value. It's quite common to see recent make Dunhills on eBay for 1/3 of MSRP, if they've been smoked a good bit, and 1/2 of MSRP unsmoked. Similar prices for older pieces, too, but with...
Another happy Peterson system owner. I do think they result in a cooler dryer smoke. I smoke lots of other pipes too, but the Peterson system pipes definitely work.
Wow, what a generous offer!
I see a number of pipes I might be interested in, but I do have a question... do you know a lot about pipes? I ask because I'd have a real concern that maybe something subtle could be wrong with a pipe, you buy it, ship it, and it turns out to have a problem. It's...
For short periods of time, you don't need a humdification unit of any kind, just put them in a tupperware container or similar food storage container, or double or triple Ziploc baggies are fine, too.
Run, don't walk, over to www.tobaccoreviews.com -- folks there do a good job of detailing what kind of stuff is in each blend, and basically what to expect in terms of flavor. (Of course, everyone has a different opinion as to what they like and dislike, and different folks will sense different...
Pretty clear from that preseason performance against the Seahawks that the Vikings have a long way to go if they want to be playing games in January... Not that this isn't possible, it was just painfully obvious that the Vikings don't have nearly the depth that the Seahawks have, and in the...
I agree that there's something suspicious here with big companies supporting FDA control, but it's pretty obvious. If the FDA has to approve new products, only huge companies will be able to launch new products, so this will be a HUGE advantage to the big tobacco companies. Small producers...
I'd never stick my neck out by outing them. On what authority do you know they are fake? That's the first thing he's going to say, regardless if he thinks they are fake or real, and if you indicate you've got a lot of knowledge about contraband, you're just getting into deep water.
Folks...
One of the big online quote deals (maybe insure.com, or possibly quotesmith.com) actually asks what kind of tobacco when you fill out the form and check "smoker". When you get your results back, it's pretty funny actually, as the two or three companies that treat occasional cigar smokers as non...
I'm really new to pipe smoking, started in April, and can echo some wisdom that's already here... and elsewhere.
Smoke SLOW. I had a lot of trouble with this. I think after three months of working at it that I've had some success recently.
If you get gurgle, or tongue bite, smoke SLOWER...
I've been organizing group buys of blank cigar bands for quite a few years now. I use them to label all the singles as they come in, so I know where (or who) I got them from and when. It's invaluable when trying to keep a bunch of shelves or trays organized... by marking things accurately I...
Yeah, but that was 14 years ago. Pretty much was the going rate then. I've been told by friends that if I resume consulting work I should charge at least $250 per hour and that's based on jobs that run at least a few days worth of time, not an hour here an hour there...
