Since this is my 500th post it seems prudent to host a little contest. The prize will be a mixed fiver of stuff I like, haven't decided exactly what yet. The theme of the contest is poker, a subject near and dear to my heart. None of the questions here should be too hard to figure out with a little bit of research but I also tried to make them tough enough that at least SOME research would be required. The contest will run until Wednesday at 4:29 and 37 seconds (PM, PAC time). To participate you must have been a member since at least November 7, and must have at least 43 posts. Thanks everyone for a great time at CP so far!

1. The story: A couple of years back I was playing a spread limit game of hold 'em in Deadwood, SD at a place called Saloon #10. I had been running hot and cold all night and several of the drunk players were getting very lucky. A few hours in on my big blind I looked down and saw Ace-eight suited (spades). The action was limped (just called) and folded to me so I raised the limit and got two callers. The flop came ace ©, 8©,J(d) giving me two pair and I was first to act. I bet and the drunk guy to my left raised. The third player folded out and the drunk guy and I fired back and forth until I was all in (spread limit heads up has no limit on the # of bets, just the amount per bet). He turns over QJh. Turn brings a harmless card and the river is a third jack, giving him a set and the winning hand. I took off to avoid tilting away any money and later that night realized what was special about the hand and circumstances.

The question: What was special about that hand and why was it particularly noteworthy to go bust with it in this situation?

2. Who has won the main event of the World Series of Poker the most times and how many times have they won it?

3. Why is 10-2 a famous poker holding?

4. What is the final winning hand in "The Cincinatti Kid"?

5. What book does Mike McDermott (Matt Damon) hide part of his bankroll in in the film "Rounders"?

6. What is the best possible final hand in the game of triple draw 2-7 lowball?

7. What American president financed one of his political campaigns substantially with poker winnings?

8. Benny Binion once hosted a famous and unprecedented heads up poker match between two legendary players that lasted over 5 months. The game ended with one of the most repeated quotes in poker history. Who played, who won and what did the loser say to the winner?

Good luck everyone

The question: What was special about that hand and why was it particularly noteworthy to go bust with it in this situation? You had high pair and it would have took a Ace/Jack to beat you there. Plus, dude was drunk?!?!

2. Who has won the main event of the World Series of Poker the most times and how many times have they won it? I think Chan and Brunson both have 10?

3. Why is 10-2 a famous poker holding? It's the hand Doyle won with. Named after him. Always plays it

4. What is the final winning hand in "The Cincinatti Kid"? Straight flush over the Full.

5. What book does Mike McDermott (Matt Damon) hide part of his bankroll in in the film "Rounders"? Doyle's Super System..

6. What is the best possible final hand in the game of triple draw 2-7 lowball? The nuts: 7-5-4-3-2

7. What American president financed one of his political campaigns substantially with poker winnings? Tricky Dick

8. Benny Binion once hosted a famous and unprecedented heads up poker match between two legendary players that lasted over 5 months. The game ended with one of the most repeated quotes in poker history. Who played, who won and what did the loser say to the winner? Johnny Moss against Nick “the Greek” Dandalos with the Greek saying, "I have to let you go..." after lossing 4 million. OUCH!!

I don't gambl00 much but I'd bet this one is done.

1) Deadmans hand
2) Brunson has won ten World Series of Poker bracelets throughout his career, tied with Johnny Chan and Phil Hellmuth for the record
3) Doyle Brunson - he won with them!!
4)Edward G Robinson outwitted Steve McQueen in The Cincinnati Kid with a hand of the eight, nine, 10, jack and queen of diamonds. Through a dense cloud of cigarette smoke, Robinson's character, Lancey Howard, drawled: "You're good, kid, but as long as I'm around, you're second best."

5) The art of war

6) 2-3-4-5-7

7) Nixon

8)Nick the Greek" and Johnny Moss - Mr. Moss, I have to let you go."

My dad loves "The Cincinatti Kid". I still haven't watched the whole thing. you must be a Doyle fan, you had a few questions about the Dolly. I'm waiting for your post on the first question. I could always use a lesson or two. I need to bump my skills so I can keeping taking my buddies when we play :p

THE DEADMAN'S hand. AND, at Deadwood. Wierd bro. I guess losing the hand is better than Wild Bill.....

It has been pointed out to me that I forgot to mention an edit rule! I will allow 1 edit and in the event of a tie (between the FIRST two people to submit all the correct answers) I will throw out a tiebreaker question of some sort. Just an FYI, nobody has gotten them all right yet. Close but no... yeah

1. Dead Man's hand at Deadwoods. He hit a 3 outer...I hate that!
2. Stu Ungar and Johnny Moss both won it 3 times
3. Doyle won Main Event twice with it
4. 8,9,10,jack, and queen of diamonds
5. Supersystem
6. 2,3,4,5,7
7. Nixon
8. Nick the Greek Dandalos and Johnny Moss; Moss won- quote Nick said "Mr. Moss, I have to let you go"

Not sure about them all, but I am crossing my fingers!

Edit 5) Super System

(that was a toughone) :(

Well Brandon pretty much nailed this one! He was the only one to get #2 correct, as the question was regarding the main event not WSOP bracelets in general. Gary came in a close second on this one but #2 was his downfall. However, since his answer was close (correct for WSOP bracelets in all events combined) and he PMed me both possible answers to #5 he gets a runner up prize to be determined!

Here is a quick breakdown of the answers that deseve explanation.

#1 Indeed I did get busted with the dead man's hand in deadwood. Not only that but it was in the saloon (saloon #10) where Wild Bill was shot while holding the hand (although I believe it was moved across the street since then).

#2 Easy to read this as 'most world series bracelets' but the main event winnings are distinct and equally impressive. Johnny Moss won his first bracelets under an entirely different WSOP structure, where he was elected to the title of champion by the other players. Stuey won his third main event championship only months before his untimely death as a result of drug use.

#3 Doyle Brunson won the main event for two consecutive years with 10-2 (making full houses both times), which has since been known as the Texas Dolly

#5 Either Caro's Book of Tells or Doyle Brunson's Super/System were fine here.

Congrats to the winners and thanks everyone for playing! Winners PM me where you want the prizes sent

Great contest!

Yea know - I thought I #2 might be off! :(

Awesome!! Thanks for the fun contest Phil. This contest makes me want to head to the casino tonight... ;) I better resist for now. :D PM on the way!!!

Brandon

Dang it!! How could I have missed this contest!! Crap, I knew all of those, but might have gotten busted on the first question because I knew a/8 was Wild Bills dead mans hand, but didn't connect the other part (where you were playing, that is pretty funny!).

Pretty cool stuff, I think there should be more poker questions! :D

I've been trying to find the Cincinatti Kid to rent. I may have to hit eBay. It was fun looking up those questions.

Yeah I might try and keep up the theme in the future, although it might be hard to come up with challenging history questions. I tried to avoid asking more technical questions for this one but next time maybe I will try that out

Probably better off just to purchase the cincinnati kid for like $9 at deepdiscountdvd.com than rent it anyway. Its a classic, Steve McQueen, Edward G. Robinson, Rip Torn, Karl Malden, oh, yes, and if thats not enough for you also Tuesday Weld and Ann Margaret (wooooof!) playing a very naughty gamblers lady:) The last hand is ridiculous and has been debated amongst poker publications forever but it makes for a good movie I guess! Straight flush over a Full House in 5 card stud! LOL

I say we keep up the poker banter, I love to discuss hands and strategy. Available anytime for such things!

Yeah it is pretty much always the case that poker scenes/movies need to have an astronomically improbable crux hand. In Cincinnati Kid it is definitely compounded by the fact they are playing 5 card stud, although that game was standard in the World Series of Poker for quite a while. For what its worth, however, I know a player who lost quads to a straight flush on a bad beat jackpot eligible table and still didn't get the jackpot. The jackpot was setup such that four of a kind or better had to get beat by another hand with both players using both hole cards. My friend had 99, other player had 78 of diamonds. Flop was 99T with 2 diamonds, turn is the jack of diamonds, river is the queen of diamonds. Becuase only one hole card played since the queen created a higher straight flush, the hand was not eligible for the jackpot (nearly 200k). He doesn't play poker anymore haha

Thats sick! I once heard a story while I was playing about a guy who so despised one poker player that when he realized that if he tabled his hand that the other guy would share in the bad beat pot, he showed it to him and mucked his hand!! The jackpot was alleged to be around 100K. Not sure its a true story, but don't know why the guy would make it up!

Wow!
Having received the 'runner-up' prize pack...if I were the winner...I'd be afraid!
Thanks!!!
