Well, I started getting intrigued about cigars when I was 18 years old, and a freshman at Central Washington University. I was in the trombone studio in the music department, and my professor as well as the older peers I had were all into good beer and great cigars. I started asking about the cigars, and found out that there was a local B&M with a small selection. The first cigar purchase I had ever made was composed of 5 swisher cigarillos, and 5 black and mild cigarillos (yes, the ones with the little mouthpipe). After my hippie roomate told me that he was alergic to them, and couldn't handle the smell on my clothes, I threw them in the garbage, and left cigars alone for a few months.
Later, I got curious again and went back to our modest BM. I found a Don Tomas tubed Robusto and a Bic lighter. I went out behind the building and smoked this one while in the cold of night, and became even more intrigued. I started looking online for retailers and came across Cigar.com where I made my first internet purchase. 2 Torano Sig Toros, 2 CAO Eileen's Dream Coronas, and a pack of ACID C-notes. The descriptions of these cigars on the website promised amazing flavors. Boy were they wrong. I opened the package when it came in the mail, and immediately got a whiff of something herb-y and gross. I smoked one of the acid's that night, and threw them in the trash. The next night, I smoked one of the Toranos. Not bad, but not quite as promised. (Of course, I was not able to discern those subtle flavors in good tobacco as yet). The next night was the CAO, and I fell in love. I bought a box of the Eileen's dream Coronas the next week and got a cheap butane lighter from the BM.
After I had smoked the CAOs down, about 4 months at one a week, I decided to branch out a little farther. I bought 2 Kahlua Coronas, 4 Torano Sigs and an Onyx. I hated the Onyx, Liked the Toranos, and (you guessed it) LOVED the Kahluas and bought a box a week later. Now about that time, I bought a 40ct humi from Thompson as well so I would have somewhere to put these cigars. I put the Kahluas into the humi, and drenched the little black piece in distilled water and showed it in my new dorm room. I smoked about 7 of those Kahluas before I found out about Cigarsmokers.com, and that is where my cigar tastes took a sharp turn.
Now, The Toranos are still a go to cigar for me, but once I hit the online boards, I decided that I would not smoke flavored cigars anymore, and start smoking REAL cigars instead. When I told my professor that I was smoking flavored cigars, he nearly disowned me. This also told me that I was probably doing something wrong. I started with a sampler from Cigar.com, and started buying singles from the BMs that were near my parents' house when I came home for some weekends. I had finally found out what cigar smoking was really about. Good tobacco, and some bs-ing time with friends, or time to myself. Right now, I have a humi with about 50-60 mixed singles in it, and to this date, the two flavoreds are the only boxes I have bought.
In fact, I still have those Kahluas around. I should rehabilitate them and give them as blind bombs... heh heh.
