I am looking for some help with desiging a website. I have found plenty of faq's and help with html, shtml, dhtml, css, xml, etc.... Right now I am researching the promotion side of it. I understand a little about piders, robots, crawlers, etc. I also understand that making you site compatible with the major search engines is important. Can anyone recommend a good place to start reading? There has got to be a good primer instead of throwing money at a company that provides SEO. TIA

I'm not good for much, but stating the obvious is kinda a specialty of mine. :)

Thats the only piece I have no experience with. All my sites are non commercial, so I could afford to be patient. Getting your site spider friendly will help speed things up.

This site has some good tips, but they also look like they are trying to sell a membership:

From the top of my head (its been a while since I did this), you'll want to:

Submit your site to all the major search engines (google, msn, altavista, ask.com, etc.)

Make sure your page titles are descriptive and informative, since many search engines rank sites higher that have hits in the page titles.

Include meta keyword and description tags on the homepage, or any page you want to be found by a search.

Create a robots.txt file in the web sites root directory notifying the spider of any pages that should not be indexed, if any.

Those are the main basics. I'm sure there are more things that can be done, and you can even PAY the search engines to rank you higher, but these are the basic steps.

Thank you, that's exactly what I was looking for.
