If anyone has an active account open please LMK if you wouldn't mind running a few cars for me. I'm getting ready to buy the daughter her first vehicle, and I'm not looking for something that will get her stranded.

Thanks.

I edited the title to keep this on the down low.... :whistling:

From personal experience it's not foolproof. You may get the registration mileage and whatnot but it's not going to give you the pertinent info you want, like the condition. The car I bought had a flawless report, once I inspected it there was major damage. Fender, door, hood, windshield all were replaced due to an accident, nothing fit 100% correct, plus small things that only an inspection would catch. Yes Carfax will give you some info but I would highly recommend hiring someone to perform an inspection, or do it yourself if it's a local purchase.

The way I understood it initially, if it was repaired as part of an Insurance claim, it was reported. But then I found out later that this is not always the case, some Insurance companies are either 'behind' in their reporting or don't do it at all. When the car is repaired privately, no report either. I used it to do the same thing for my son when we bought a car and got hit-or-miss info at best. Later, after we bought a car privately, I received paperwork from a law firm representing people in a class action suit involving them...I received a months free service I never used as payment for their indiscretions for something....I don't remember exactly what the deal was and why.

Good Luck...a local mechanic you trust is still your best source of honest info.

I also recently learned that some accidents reported aren't anything to be concerned about. I just gave my 19 year-old son a helping hand buying a 2002 Mazda B3000 4x4 (a.ka. Ford Ranger) and the dealer gave us a fresh CarFax on it. The report showed a 2004 accident. I went to the local police dept where it was reported to happen, and had the clerk there look it up on her computer for me. The officer's report stated "little or no damage" from being rear-ended by a Hyundai. I crawled under the thing everywhere, and could find not even a scratch on the chrome bumper.

BTW, if you have an account it's against their rules to run reports for others. If their computers searching find it being posted that someone is doing it, they'll cancel your account.

This sucks, I also got screwed because of carfax's delayed reporting. When we bought our G500, it was a "Mercedes Certified Used Vehicle", only a couple years old, and the dealer showed us a clean carfax report. A year later when we realized that truck was a maintainence nightmare and wanted to trade it in no one would take it because the new carfax report now showed two accidents that happened right before we bought it.

PS - anyone from MN, never buy a car from Feldmann Imports, they're a bunch of scumbags.

I would be careful openly asking for this. I'm on a few car forums and this is a big no-no around those parts. The threads get closed and members get a message. The reason being that it's all in their terms of use, and they don't take lightly to it, from what I've heard. I'm not sure if it's of concern here, or if it's seen as a problem to Rod, but this is a public place, and everything you do can be seen by pretty much anyone.

For those that were warry of the CFP, ( that would be the car facts police... ) would everyone please let this die and fade into the depths of cigar pass posting history.
