Hobbling hero
Some of you may have noticed I haven't been as active on the boards, its not due to a lack of interest in cigars its due to a lack of time. I have been commuting by bike to work (15 miles each way) which adds about two hours on my normal 9+ hours of work, then riding on the weekend. I still smoke, but its more a cherished event, then a couple times of week thing.
I had an accident yesterday. I wanted to post this to give a reminder to those bike riders out there to keep your head up and never assume anything, like I did ???
Yesterday while merging from a wide right line into a narrow right line I had a truck make a right in front of me right after the merge and a knarly drain I was avoiding. Actually, he only half made the right and then stopped when he realized I was there. He was not signaling and before it happened he had given me what I assumed to be a large birth of space. I was wrong in my assumption, it was for him to swing his truck into a driveway. After he stopped I had no where to go or room to stop and I ended up colliding into the truck.
The damage is about seven stitches to my left arm when I hit his passenger side rear-view mirror (tearing it off the truck and turning it into a glass shrapnel bomb) which tore into my arm giving me a couple wide and deep lacerations and alot of abrasions in the area. I'm sore all over from the resulting crash off the bike and roll up the driveway.
Its sobbering for me to think that regardless of how careful I ride, which to my friends and family I am considered the bike safety Nazi. That accidents like this can still happen. This isn't going to stop me from riding, but it is going to add another notch on my belt in terms of experience and things to avoid while I'm out on the road.
