Christie's Auction Nov 15

You have to have someone on site for this to be worth your time. I heard the Sir Winston Green Box wasn't in great condition.

Very true Rob. You have no way of knowing what your buying unless you are there or know someone who can varify the condition at pre auction viewing.

The Davi Lafite's did sell they went for 1,100 pounds.. They also mentioned that this may be their last auction
Bob

Really? I apologize, I was misinformed. Shame that it may be their last auction.....I would love to go to London in the future and attend one. Oh well...

Hi Mike apparently I was wrong and you were right. I did see them sell for 1,100 pounds, however the lot must have been withdrawn after the sale for some reason. I stand corrected.

One more thing of note. Lots 533 534 and 536 all Davi no 1s and no2s were pulled prior to the auction. Again I dont know why. They gave no explanation. Also lots 575 and 576 1986/7 cohiba lanceros sold for 1300 pounds each but were later withdrawn. Very odd.

Damn, lost my chance for the 80's Cohibas and more Davidoff's.

I would assume that lots that were pulled were done so for quality reasons. Could have been some side deals made ahead of time too, it's been known to happen......

I lost the Por Larranaga Cubanos No. 1 by 10 GBP. I put in for 120 and it sold for 130.

Funny how that happens when you're not in attendance, isn't it?
Yes & no. I figure if I was there I would have bid more and ended up paying close to $400 with the exchange,VAT and buyers premium.

Same here. If you keep a safe distance you can't be hurt that bad. :D I was already tapped out from another sale anyway.

No problem Bob. Is it common that so many lots were pulled post-auction? If it was a quality issue, wouldn't that have been addressed prior to the sale?

The short answer is, it can happen. I have seen cigars get pulled because they discovered that they were fakes. By the way they don't like to publicly say this as it hurts their reputation for allowing them to enter the auction in the first place. I doubt very much any of these were fakes. I also do not think quality was an issue either. Maybe there was a bank account, credit or funding issue. The buyer is responsible for assuring the cigar quality prior to an auction. In the end maybe only the auctioneer knows what happened. All else is just speculation. I am going to inquire though.

I have over looked the obvious on a couple of these lots that I didnt realize. The Davi Lafite's (lot 476) hammer price got 1,100 GBPs. The low estimate for this lot was 1,400 GBPs. The seller simply withdrew the lot as it did not meet the reserve which is usualy the low limit of the auction estimate.

Same happened the The Cohiba Lanceros lots 575/576. Hammer price got 1,300 GBPs while the low estimate was 1,500.

Note from a friend in attendance said it was an average to above average auction. Several items were reserved too high for the bidders in attendance. And, apparently that was the last vintage auction in London for a long while.
