If you've ever wondered what club fitting can do for you, here are my stats from yesterdays Iron fitting. These numbers look like a bunch of gobeldigook but if you know what they mean it helps. You will hit multiple clubs with multiple different shafts to see what works best for you. The Titleist T200 is what I think I am going with based on all the data. Some clubs performed better in certain categories but The Titleist was the most consistent in the key categories.

These were all hit with a 7 iron.
The 1 thru 4 are the four different shots I hit with that club.
Club speed and ball speed are obvious.
Smash factor is the ratio of ball speed to club speed. A ball speed of 1.5 times club speed is optimum.
Attack angle is the horizontal angle your club is traveling at impact, my average was a 3.25 degree downward angle.
Club path is direction of clubhead at impact, negative means inside to outside.
Face angle is the angle of the face at impact, you can see my face was slightly open on most swings.
Face to path is the relationship of the direction of the swing path to the angle of the face at impact, you can see I was very inconsistent.
Launch angle is the angle of ball flight to horizontal at impact.
Spin rate is important for ball movement and control, the higher the better.
Carry is the yardage the ball flew before landing.

Nice. I never had an active fitting session. I always ordered off the Internet. +1.5 inches and 4° upright.

They look like the old CB irons. Almost went with the CB’s years ago.

I’ve always like Titleist for the thin top-line look at address.

I still have my AP2 712’s gathering dust in the garage.

What shaft did you go with?

I will probably go with the recoil 780.

It's amazing how much the technology has changed! I was playing the AP2 718 and by going to the newer technology irons I gained a club and a half in distance.

A big part of that is the delofting of irons. It looks like the T200 7 iron loft is 30.5°, while on the AP2 718 it's 34°.

Going back even farther, the DCI 990 7 iron was 36°.

That's true, yet the new irons fly higher, and spin more, which is the key to today's game.

If you can get the same distance with more carry, higher ball flight, and less roll, you gain control of ball placement.

I haven't golfed much in a few years now, but that's interesting. So the lower lofts are brought about as an result of the higher flight and not just to add distance.

Correct. Think about approach shots that require you to navigate greenside hazards such as water or sand? If you can get virtually all of your distance in the form of Carry, it allows you to land the ball on the green softly rather than it coming in Like a missile.

This explains why the debate over Jack vs Tiger will rage forever. Jack did what he did with thirty five year older equipment.
