How do you cut your cigars? Is there any major difference between cutting the tip or punching it? Thanks.

I keep a punch on the keychain and a double guillotine cutter in the wallet. Depends on the stick.

Lots of threads on this, just do a search.

Cut or Punch

Torpedos.

A Search

I usually cut torps at an angle, like in the thread above.

For my Guillotine cutters, I cheat and set teh cutter on teh table, set the cigar in the cutter and snip. Perfect cut 99% of the time.

I've also been known to use a knife, teeth or whatever is handy <grin>.

I use a cutter most of the time, but I use a punch when smoking one with less flavor because it concentrates the smoke a little more. At least in my mind it does, I'm not sure how much it actually changes a smoke.

Just personal preference - I sort of like the punch but many of my smokes are torpedos which necessitate cutting. Just try both methods for yourself and do whatever you like the best.

I dont like punches...never have, never will. They seem to attract more tar to a localized spot and can make the cigar taste weird sometimes. I prefer a double bladed guilitine(spelling?) cutter. Properly cut, i feel they provide just as much intergity to the cap and wrapper as any punch, but deliver a better smoke. I buy cheap ones...it hurts to toss an expensive one when it gets dull. Buy the cheapo 2 dollar ones...they cut just as well and dont dent the wallet when it comes time to chuck em. I replace them maybe every 100 or so cigars...probably more. Youll know when its time.

I used to use a punch but found that THAT method was too messy, always left scraps sticking out of the head. So I then switched to the double blade cutter method and found that it worked a lot better. I'd love to know if anyone on this list has ever used those Boston tabletop cutters that gives the "cat eye" wedge cut on the cigar?

I currently use the Xicar cutter and absolutely love it. At first it was tough to get used to but now that I am more accustomed to holding it a more comfortable way, its awesome!

Yep, my shop in Destin has one (Harbor Cigars). I like it alot, but wouldn't get one for myself (price). It works really well IMO, even on the LFD Chisels.

I have always used a guillotine cutter. My favorite is the swiss army knife cutter. I have cut well over ten thousand cigars with it and it works like it did when it was brand new.
