D-Day

Thanks for the reminder Gavin, helluva day. There was an Eisenhower special on not too long ago and he is quoted as saying D-Day was very strange to him because one moment he was the leader of the largest military force assembled and after a single command he was nothing but a spectator. There was nothing else he could do but watch the weather and wait because the force was running on automatic. One day I'll make it to Normandy.

Today i have taken some time to think about my great grandfather. His name was Kenneth Meckley and was a 20 year old man when when the US joined the war, and sensing that this was a war worth fighting he enlisted in the army to become a member of the infantry. Then on this day he jumped out a boat and joined the largest amphibious invasion in the history of the world. From Utah beach he ended up completing the tour in France and earning a bronze star for replacing com lines destroyed by a Panzer unit. Later as the war winded down he was sent home with other decorated men to raise his family and work in the steel mill. Unfortunately he passed away this year but I consider myself lucky to have the time to get to know him. I'm very proud of being related to him, someone who was truly selfless and fought for us to live the way we do. He will be missed but never forgotten!

"The Greatest Generation", no doubt.

I recently had a weekend-long seminar on Operation Overlord and the Normandy offensive. It's amazing what went right, what went wrong, and what advantages luck and good fortune provided. A lot of lessons were learned during this period that shaped the future of the American military forces, as well as how we interact on an allied level with other international forces.

There's a lot of movies being remade these days. If it's gotta happen, I would like to see "The Longest Day" modernized with an all-star ensemble cast (as it was in its time) and staying true to the original.

And our President instead of honoring this came out to LA on a money grab.
I know there is some type of anniversary of something most days but there are a few that are super important. Bad form IMHO.
