Ok, you've all heard of them - these peer-to-peer file sharing packages. Call it Kazaa, Gnutella, Napster, Morpheus, whatever you want. Now they can be used not only to download MP3's, but also software, movies, documents... pretty much anything you could desire.
Who uses them, and who doesn't? Just curious

Dave :D

I use Lime Wire and Bearshare sometimes. A lot of the music I listen to isn't mainstream and is only available on vinyl. So I will go check it out by downloading it. A guy I goto school with downloads movies. The quality isn't always the greatest with Divx compression, but passable. I have seen some of the new Star Wars movie he downloaded. Yoda kicks ass. Works best is you have a digital connection.

I don't download much in the way of mp3s. Most of what you find is encoded at 128k, which sounds like crap. Plus I mostly use the ogg vorbis format. Maybe there's more ogg out there now than there used to be, but last time I looked it was hard to find. Nearly all of my mp3/ogg music is ripped from my CDs.

I do download live shows by bands that allow taping. This is done in a format called shorten (shn). For that I use FTP or usenet.

For screeners I use almost exclusively usenet. The download speeds are waaay faster than P2P.

Hey!!!! Ain't gonna be no Black Helicopters circlin' my apartment for the way I answered this poll is there? ???

:p :D

Ha ha ha ha

Well, at one point in my life, I'd have to answer the 'everything I own is downloaded', but not so much anymore :p Since PB is puttin out the black helicopters, ya gotta check out the newest batch of goodies: KDX. VERY good stuff. Most of the old Hotline, Carracho, IRC villans are using it now. Not gonna post ya links or anything, because if your into that stuff, you'll know where to look. Uh, not that I know ANYTHING aboot that kind of thing *cough*

In the old days, I'd use IRC, BBS's, rarely newsgroups (I hate .rar and waiting for the idjits to post the corect lineup of files :p). Hell I used to be a provider of most of the illegal downloading on the East Coast in the 80's........WHOOT LOL...

But alas, that was a past life. Now I actually pay for software. My 20 gig Ipod has almost 5 gigs of music on it encoded at 320k, and everything but one song is from my own collection (I can't wait for Apple to support Ogg... MMMMM, Ogg). My OS is paid for... Crikey, I sound like one of them reformed junkies.... *hands shaking* Must..... Download.... Ginger Lynn...... Porn.........Now.........!..... D'oH!

Tony, did you see the interview on Slashdot with Chris Tresco. Chris was known as BiGrAr within the warez group DrinkOrDie. For the next 33 months he will be living in federal housing for his crimes. That article will put the ph34r of God in you.

Ya, I read that, really good article. Funny thing is, I never feared it when I did all that stuff, but now when I visit a website that has that stuff, I'm all paranoid. I laugh about it now, but it was a pretty stupid thing to do.

Those DoD guys were badasses tho, they were the ones that came up with Back Orrifce and a whole bunch of other stuff. I'm sure once he comes out and has a book deal, he's gonna go into security like Mitnick's trying to do :p

Now Mitnick was stupid. He ran. Made things a million times worse for himself for running. And all the stories about his 'false imprisonment' is a bunch of hooey. He was an ass before he got caught, so I'm pretty sure he was a bigger one once they had him behind closed doors.

Blah. Makes me mad thinking about this stuff.

Back Orifice was CdC (Cult of the Dead Cow). What Mitnick did was totally different. He was going around breaking into peoples networks....Defense Dept. networks. Not a good way to live to see old age. That's a whole different ballgame than software piracy (hate that term).

Piracy is selling copies of the software. Physical hard copies. This will also incur a very stiff sentance if caught.

Emo

Actually 'piracy' is carrying out the act of copying and distributing a copyrighted piece of software, music, etc..

CdC and DoD were one in the same at one point of time, they broke up because Cult wanted to try and become 'legit' by making BO and market it as a network utility, and DoD didn't want any part of it and wanted to remain 'hardcore' and git into the hacking/redistribute games and application stuff.

Mitnick did actualy at one time belong to a group, but he was way out there getting into the whole phreak scene, trying to top Captain Crunch and some of the others. He was really a smart guy that really got in over his head with mouthing off to people. He was almost like Jack the Ripper, he'd go and call the places he had just broke into and brag. Jerk.

LOL

Anyway, there's nothing to see here.....Move along... :p

I don't think I'm going to comment anymore on this so I don't have the helicopters flying around Brooklyn... "No officer, I've really been a good boy all these years. Computers? No I don't have any of those"

I didn't know that about CDC and DOD....that's interesting. I know just enough about that stuff to try to keep my networks safe...most of the time anyway. I don't have the type of mentality to come up with ways to break into networks....my brain just doesn't work that way. Here's a piece of trivia that I think is kinda funny. Do you know what port BO opens up to allow the client to connect? 31337! All you non-geeks...this is a geek joke so don't feel bad if you don't get it. And no, I'm not going to explain it because it's just not funny if you have to explain it.

Tony, aren't you a Mac Guy?? I was thinking you were, and if so it does sortof make your statement true.....doesn't it?

PB, ya, I'm a computer guy. Started at 8 yr old, haven't been without a computer since. Well, for a brief period I was confiscated and under computer lock down for 3 years for 'piracy', when I turned 18 I was allowed to have computers again. Those 3 years were the longest, most boring 3 years of my life. But it also got me out of the house, got me back on track with school, girls, sports, and that thing called Life(tm)

Only the past year I've been a Mac guy, I've always been a PC person, worked as a net admin, tech support, IT manager, etc. When Win Xp came out, I kind of snapped and looked for something else to play with. I chose the Mac because I like Free BSD, and really was starting to go in another direction with computers (more towards design and web development), so Mac's made sense for me. I like Linux too, but for a dumbed down me, I just took the easy way out and picked an Imac and a G4 tower. I still have Linux running on an old laptop I have, and have a PC running 98se, but otherwise stick to the Mac now.

FT, that little joke is pretty damn funny :p I didn't even realize that until you just now pointed it out LOL... Good one :D

Even if we don't get it, that doesn't mean some of us would appreciate it. :0

Ok, but don't groan at me if you don't think it's funny....trust me you won't.

In hacker-ebonics, words are often spelled with numbers or the wrong letters. E.g., 0 for O, 4 for A, 3 for E, etc. So hacker becomes h4x0r....stuff like that. Hackers like to describe themselves as elite as in "ph34r my l33+ h4x0r sk1lz" (translation: fear my elite hacker skills - elite is usually shortened to leet). 31337 spells eleet (elite), so it's the perfect port for Back Orifice to use.

Told ya..... :p

Gotcha...when you mentioned the port, it didnt click, but I was looking at it analytically. There used to be a stand alone BB that I subscribed to when I got my first real puter back in 96. On a side note, do any of you computer geeks( I mean that affectionately ) know of a client/server program that would allow me to dial into my own computer and access a DSL/Cable connection?

Emo

Sorry...port is TCP or UDP port, not COM port.

This is a question: You're looking for something that will answer the phone when you call, establish a PPP connection and route traffic through a broadband connection via your home network. Do I understand you correctly?

I assume we're talking some flavor of Windows here....this is really easy with Unix, but somewhat harder with Windows. I don't know of the exact name of what you're looking for, but the first part of that is a PPP server, the second is just normal IP forwarding. It's very possible that both are provided with Windows, especially 2000, which is almost like a real operating system. I think the MS term for the PPP server is RAS (remote access server) and comes with 2000 server and (I think) NT server. For 98-like versions of Windows, this is probably doable with some effort, but possibly not because 98 doesn't do routing afaik. Once you RAS into the network, with proper configuration of the router, you should be able to go back out through the broadband connection. I'm sorry, but I just don't know enough about Windows networking to tell you exactly what to do. Perhaps someone else can fill in the numerous blanks or you can google something up with some of the keywords I've mentioned. Hth....

I am running windoze, which is why I was askining about an app...I am probably going to get a DSL in near future, but was also looking into a Sat connection I have a background in Sat Com, and I move every 4-6 years so it looks like a good deal. Especially becuase I believe in 10 years, 1/4 of all consumer internet access in the US will go throuh sats. I do have a old Pentium box I was thinking of putting Redhat on. But the one thing that holds me back is hardware issues. I don't know what is supported and what isn't. I will be using a Unix based OS on an old DoD network soon, and I am going to be forced to learn Unix on my own, by being thrown into the fire. I guess I should pick up a Unix for Dummies and give it a shot.

On a side note, anyone out there recommend a booting software? I want to run Redhat and 98. I have to find out if my hardware will work first, but I am determined to learn and master it.

Emo

Oh yeah, PM me so I can turn off this hijack I am on. Sorry guys! :(

You don't need booting software to dual-boot Redhat and 98. Use the RH boot loader (either lilo or grub) and tell it you have a bootable FAT32 partition. It will ask you at boot time which one you want to use. If you say nothing, it will boot whichever one you specify as the default. However, if you just want to use a 3rd party boot loader, Norton Commander is the way to go.

Regarding hardware compatibility, since about version 7.0 RH has been very, very good at plug and play. There's very little that won't work. Winmodems being the notable exception (for obvious reasons). Take a look at the Linux Documentation Project for more info.
