Ok, back from the doctor's tonite and apparently my HDL is on the low side.

Doc suggested I start having some red wine several times a week if not daily.

So.......as I am not a huge wine drinker, would welcome some suggestions on good red wines.

As for price range, let's start at "reasonable" and work up.

Also, dont be shy to suggest cigar pairing as I plan on using this as opportunity to smoke a bit more. That was not part of the Doc's orders.

Thanks in advance............

Al

What is reasonable? I know I couldn't afford the stuff I currently drink if I was doing it on a daily basis. For around $13 Roodeberg is a really great South African wine. Plus you get the mystique of drinking something that isn't from CA. Of course there is always Yellow Tail in its various forms for under $10. I personally would stay away from things like Fetzer and Beringer. While they are cheap, they are not very good. If you step things up just a bit, St. Francis Cab is one of my favorites and is about $20. Going up from there, Sequoia Grove for $32 is a nice, every once and a while wine. Just a few of my favorites. Hope you give them a try and like them.

Geez, your lucky all my doctor ever says is stop smoking, stop drinking, get more exercise. Maybe I should see your guy!

Hey Al,

Take a look at the Zinfandels from Rosenblum Cellars, Bogle, Michael~David Vineyards (7 Deadly Zins), Ravenswood for some nice California QPR wines. I mention these guys because their distribution is larger and I've been generally inpressed by their quality and affordability. I purchase Rosenblum regularly for my cellar as they have good QPR wines as well as wonderful high end wines as well. I also enjoy Zinfandels with a good cigar.

I have to agree with the 7 Deadly Zins, one of my favorites. Also, for a low end $7-10, try the Smoking Loon Merlot.

I usually just buy whatever jug they have on sale :sign:

I had a Black Opal a while back I enjoyed, I think it was a merlot blend. I have had a few Messina Hof red wines I liked, but I dont remember what they were, and I doubt you could even find them.

For everyday drinking I would recommend just about any Chateau St. Michelle. Very good bottle for the price, the Merlot, Chiraz and Cabernet are all excellent for $9-15 a bottle. Another very reasonably priced bottle that is excellent for the money would be Santa Cristina's Antinori 2004 Sangiovese Toscana. I stumbled upon this wine when I was making some home made Cioppino for my girlfriend. Just figured I would give it a try and it blew my mind for the price. You can find it probably at any wine store as well as grocery stores that carry a decent stock of wine selection. For nights when you want to spend a few more bucks than that go with the tried and true Rutherford Hills selections and Stag's Leap, bottles will cost you anywhere between $20-45 on average and are quite tasty.

Good luck, let me know what you think.

Agreed. Smoking Loon wines are always a good value. The Cab and Syrah are also easy to find and very tasty. I can usually pick 'em up for $7.99 a bottle.

Second the 2004 smoking loon merlot

I just remembered another sleeper .... Delicato Family Vineyards makes a really good QPR Shiraz. They've been winning all sorts of awards with this wine at the Californina State Fair over the last few years. I've visited the winery a few times and have always thought their Shiraz was a decent wine for the price.
