Okay, so I'm 44 and have never played golf. It's something I've always wanted to try so yesterday I signed myself and my 13-year old son up for lessons. Am I looking at a lifetime of fun or heartache from here on out?

Any advice? How about clubs? I'm thinking about getting a used set until I'm more involved in the game and know what I'll really need/want.

Thanks in advance!

norCal speaks the truth! Keep your head down, don't get frustrated. You will suck very badly for the first few thousand times you try to hit the ball. My best piece of advice, is swing slower (MUCH slower) than you think you need to. You won't drive 250+ yards, but the chances are better (still not good, but better) that you will make clean contact.
Enjoy hating every minute of your recreation, all in exchange for the fleeting minute of joy that follows hitting a good shot! The best part about golf is smoking cigars!

I've never played golf either (other than knocking some balls into Cook Inlet once) but anything you can share with your son is worth it. Enjoy!

I started 5 years ago when I was 48 and I got hooked. It is the most frustrating game, just when you think you got it, you haven't got it  The best part of golf for me is that I get out of the house and into some beautiful surroundings - all golf courses are beautiful.

It is not a cheap sport, you are going to love buying cigars after a few months at golf :whistling:

You are right to start off with "any" clubs until you get your swing going. At that time you will want to get fitted out for the right clubs - all brands are good.

After 2 years I started to get hassles with my hips so I switched to Natural Golf. I had to change my swing and basically start over. The change was good for me, no more sore hips and I hit the ball straighter and further. There are Natural Gold teachers all over the US, check their website.

For an older guy I suggest Natural Golf, it's a lot less strain on the body.

Good luck.

I'm a firm believer that there's nothing in this world that can be so frustrating, so relaxing and so much fun all at the same time, if you keep the right attitude.

Listen to your coach, he's gonna tell you to do stuff that feels weird and you may think you look stupid doing it, but if you pay attention, and practice hard, it'll be very rewarding.

Used clubs are fine, but do yourself a favour and get fitted / measured at a good shop (Golfsmith and Carls are huge) to make sure you get a set-up that fits your physique. If you can't find a decent set of used name brand that fits you, don't be afraid to go with a new set of Snake Eyes (Golfsmith's brand) and they'll fit you like a glove.

Be honest with them and tell 'em you're a beginner and there's a 99.9% chance they'll take good care of you.

Remember that Rome wasn't built in a day, and that most of the pros that make it look easy have been playing golf for hours a day since you were knee high to a new tobacco plant. No offence, but the vast majority of golfers will never be "good". I believe statistics show that only 10% of golfers in the world would break 90 if they follow the rules to the letter, so it may be years before you break 100, if you ever do.

However, the game is as much fun as you make it, especially learning the game with your son. I often wish I had had that chance.

Enjoy, and anything you want to ask, feel free to PM me.

Congrats - 1st you are doing the absolute correct thing by getting lessons. I have been playing golf for 35 years - It is both fun and frustrating.

Without a doubt, get used clubs from EB** - I would look for a forgiving cavity back club ( Taylormade RAC clubs would be a good choice ) -

Try to walk the course as much as possible - too many times we are racing around in carts, and do not enjoy the experience.

Make sure you get "good" golf shoes. Nothing is more miserable than having your feet hurt. A good pair will be $ 80 to $ 100.

The laughs my son ( 20 yrs old ) and my brothers have on the course are priceless. It is a game that only a select few can master. Enjoy the good shots - forget about the bad shots - and enjoy the bond that you and your son will have for a life time.

All the advice is good. Just make sure you have time for the cart girls!

left arm straight, right arm at 90 bend, head down, coil at waist, cock wrists, follow through completly with every shot, watch caddy shack ones or twice...
"be the ball danny..na na na na na na na"

I go to the driving range once in a while. Damn you will really suck the first few times. After some patience and a slow swing you will get the hang of it. Remember hold you club tighly. Dont be like me and let it fly from the 2nd storey of the range.

P.S No one got hurt. Some amused people and the club got run over by the
ball picker. ;)

Keep your butt out like freebern was behind you and don't push the plunger on the ball cleaner more than three times or you're a homo.... oh and it's FORE!!!!!, not four. :)

Remember hold you club tighly.

Nope, hold it gently like it was your first time masturbating. Otherwise your hands will be sorer than after a porno double feature.

Make sure you hit your tee shot past the ladies tees. If not, you are required to finish the hole w/ your pants down around your ankles. I hear this is the way Matt plays his rounds.

I took lessons when I was 13 and then went on to play golf in High School, most valuable player, and then into my adult life. I finally gave it up just about completely. Yeah, I was a very good golfer back in the day when it wasn't cool, golf team and band geek  .

The one thing my first instructor really pushed me on was getting my swing right. He would always tell me "don't worry where the ball goes, worry how your swing looks". When I would get a great shot I would proudly turn around look for praise and he would ask "how was your swing?". This went on for about two years and I must say that I did have a great swing. When I would play in tournaments people would always comment on how good my swing was, and that was after a 250 yard drive .... back then that was a long drive.

It's not about distance either, even though the club manufacturers will lead you to believe you've gotta drive the ball 300+. Keep it straight and practice your putting. Putting should be about 50% of the round, if you don't need extra shots to get it there.

Oh and we play Texas style, not Oklahoma style. If you don't get the ball past the ladies tee, you play with your pecker hanging out of the piss hole in your pants. Not with your pants around your ankles. It's too hard to walk that way.

So, to recap all the excellent advice:

1. Churchills!
2. Just relax and have fun :)
3. Keep my head down
4. It’s okay to buy used clubs – at least for starters
5. I will suck at this game - better get used to it right now :D
6. Don’t play with freebern standing behind me
