Well I’m going to do my best to give you a quick rundown of my past. I was hired at my current company while I was still in high school to help provide digital solutions for there never ending paper work and help improve there processes. I never really went to collage (big mistake) since it was good money and I’ve been here about 2 and ½ years. Well last year I was put in charge of developing a database for our preventative maintenance. I did and it turned out all right, easily useable interface but not exactly what they were looking for. So I was given until dec of this year to redevelop it. Due to staff changes and what not I was given new supervisors and hammed with work and I never really got a chance to work on it until this week. When I went to start changing it I noticed a new database that was really, really good. I’m still trying to figure out what they all did here. Turns out they brought in an intern in a different division and had them work on it. I just got this kicked in the gut feeling you know. I’ve been doing this stuff for awhile now and I got my ass handed to me. I guess my question is when do you know its time to move on with your career path? I’m kicking around trying to go back to school and maybe change up jobs? Has this kinda thing happened to you guys?

My advice would be to try to find an employer that will pay for your college classes. I did night school and weekends to finally finish my 4 year degree. It seems like a huge uphill climb, but it will definitely be worth it in the end. As for the kick in the nuts, that will probably happen another 25-50 times in your career. Maybe you should start wearing a cup to work.

Good Luck

Part of the problem is that you may not be privvy to the big picture. Don't take this as somebody stealing your thunder. I see it as your leadership not properly directing you. I recently asked for some quality time with my VP over this very subject and we both walked away with a whole different outlook. Never take the "I'm being picked on" perspective. Refresh your view of the big picture and find out where you fit in it. You might find out that you fit poorly, or not at all. Fix that, or move on.

Edit: Find the time to get your education while you're young enough to properly capitalize on it.

Well its not that I feel like I being picked on, I didn’t mean it to sound like that. I meant it as someone fresh came in and simply did a better job than I know how too. But your right, change is needed.

I have found, that even for myself, being on the inside can lend itself to stagnation and status quo. Don't kick yourself for not knowing everything. Instead, take it as a challenge to learn more. Approach your employer about education expenses, look into seminars being held in your area, pick up the latest book on the subject. IT is changing so fast these days, that I would be lost if I tried to go back without some kind of updated training.

You've just been reminded that your number one job in life is to never stop learning.

Just a thought is it possible that while you were multi tasking this interns sole responsibilitie was to fix the data base. Maybey your boss realized you were over tasked and tried to do you a favor by reasigning that piece of work.

I was going to say the same thing
